    Should I upgrade the ESC?

    Hey Everyone,

I'm running a Neu 1515, 2200kv with a Hobby Wing 180A Esc, 4s single pack, my boat is a Toysport Synchron mono, 30" I usually run a m440 prop, x440 for a little more speed, I've run this setup for 7+ years and I got the itch try something different without getting into another boat. I just got some new CNHL 4S 5000mAh G+ 70C packs and they have been great for my oval runs, things have run really well and cooler since switching out my old Revolectrix packs. I also have on the way a SMC SRD v3 Speed Run pack to test out 5300 mAh 250C. I was going to play around with this for some faster straight passes and see if I could get a little more out of it. As some have said the power is in the batteries and motor/esc just distribute what is given. Am I playing with fire, literally..., running this pack with the Hobby Wing? Should I upgrade the esc first?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

you can probably run it up to a 1716 with that esc.

I want to understand this better, High C rate pack like the SRD 250c is designed to have a large amount of current pulled from it. I understand manufacturers are not completely accurate with their claims but im asuming its going to deliver more than CNHL's . In my setup, is the 2200kv motor the weak link, the 180A esc or both? If I had a esc like the castle X8s or XLX2 could that same motor make use of the current available? Would there be more options for props at that point to try and draw more current and get faster speeds?

The ESC is the fuse in that scenario. The motor will continue to make as much power as it can, and will pull more amps when you put more load to it (larger prop, poor hull setup). Whether or not your ESC can handle that load will probably dertermine how much speed you get before it cuts off or burns up. That's not to say a 180A ESC can't be used, you just need to run an appropriately sized prop and watch temperatures during/after your run.

All things equal, just switching to a better battery in a given setup will probably get you more speed and not blow anything up assuming you aren't comparing a decrepit, old lipo to something brand new and highly capable.

Okay thanks!, so I've got aside from the x/m 440's a X442 and X642, that 1716 being the largest you would try, what's that in a Octura equivalent? I'm guessing a 45 would be to much?... I don't have any trim tabs so does that come into the equation when choosing props. Any other props you guys would try and what kind of temps would be the end of the line for this motor/esc? sorry... a lot of questions never played around with this setup.

ABC props give the best speed but you have check temps ,you can try abc 1616-17 ,1714-17 maybe a 1814-17 that's on the very edge

Cool thanks, I'll give these options a go. 1814-17 looks to be the only one in stock on ose at the moment. Other than getting data logging, which might be worth it in itself, is the Castle X8s a upgrade performance wise over the Hobbywing180? On paper the Hobbywing looks to have better continuous and peak power but thats not always real world. Who are you guys using for getting props balanced? It's been a while...

              Thanks again!

Took it for a rip this afternoon with the new SRD pack, ran the x442, Temps were 115F on the esc, 99F on the motor and 94F on the battery. Had a bit of chine walk, more than with the 440's, is that caused by lift or cg? It's got a flood chamber so weight is a little one sided anyway so it will roll back over. I have an adjustable stinger but I have never adjusted it, Looked quick, waiting on a gps to start getting some speed benchmarks but it's a start.

Octura X and M series props are great props for your set up. ABC props are not automatically faster. They do give an easier option to change prop dynamics because they have so many props that are incrementally larger or smaller in size, blade area and pitch.
