That's a great idea. Thanx for sharing.

Ok I have the first run under my belt! It was really fun but boy was i nervous. We went to a nearby lake and tried to find a calm spot. Turns out what looks like calm on a large lake isn?t really calm. Lots of very low swells from far off full size boat wakes. So I never really got above half throttle for the test run. It?s pretty quick. I have never gone this fast with a boat so I was taking it easy. It turns just fine and tracks real straight. The temps never got above 105 on anything. My wife took a little bit of video but it was hard for her with a fast model standing in a rocking boat and I was circling the boat we were in so it was in the way. The other tough part for her was the bright sun making her phone screen dim. Still she got in a few good shots and a short video. That little boat was launched up in the air several times by the waves in the lake. I need to go to a different body of water.

The bummer of the whole thing is my esc is now unresponsive. I went home and downloaded the data log. During that download the esc started beeping really weird, like the power was dying. The battery was plenty full. I Didn?t think much of it but today I went to go to a smaller pond in the ESC turns on and runs the receiver, but will not run the motor no beeps for sale count ready status anything it?s dead. It uses Bluetooth to connect to an app and the app cannot connect to the ESC to check any settings or firmware. I should?ve gone with a Castle Hydra right off the bat. I tried to save a few bucks and go with a big truck esc from hobbywing. My cooling setup worked great. The data shows I never taxed it at all and never got hot. Something strange happened during the data download. This is a real letdown after a fun day yesterday. I'm sure if I send it in I?ll pay a bunch for shipping and a bunch for repairs especially since I converted the waterproof esc to water cooling. Uggggg!!!!!!

Awesome to finally see her running Pete, but that sucks regarding the ESC! Good luck on trying to get HW to do anything. I ran big HW ESCs on my large helis for years, and they will typically try and sell you another one at a discounted rate and blame the user for any and all issues. I sent one of mine in to HW USA just to have new wires soldered on it because its a bear to remove/resolder the air ESCs, and they lost it and gave me the run around for 4 months. I had to threaten to sue them for "stealing my $450 ESC after I showed them the email from the Tech that was working on it proving they had it, after they started claiming they never had it in the first place!

Castle on the other hand is a truely US company, and you can get anything you want from them with a simple phone call. Ive even had them do a refresh on several of ESCs Ive owned over the years with new wires, cases if applicable and new stickers that make the ESC look like new, and they do it quickly at a reasonable cost

Your temps are great, especially considering half throttle is one of the worst places to be on a boat, as ESC battery ripple is the absolute highest at that value. Ripple is one of the things that heats up the electronics and burns ESCs down if the caps get overloaded and fail

She is going to be haulin' once you get the chance to go wide open

Thanks Tony! The run on the water was a lot of fun. I want to do more !! I am sure my setup is going to need tuning, but I need time on the water and get an eye for what its doing out there. I'll bet there is an XLX2 in my future, nice to hear they are a good company after the sale. Hobbywing is already asking what truck, gear ratio, etc it was in and I'm sure my water cooling conversion ( that worked perfectly ) will be at fault as far as they are concerned. I wouldn't think a waterproof esc should be hurt by water especially when the only thing getting wet is the aluminum fins nothing else gets wet so water isn't the problem. besides it worked on the water and when it got home hours later.

Oh well kind of a damper on the maiden run but its just a component, easy to swap and the hull didnt get hurt in any way. Maybe there is a memorial day sale out there to help me out with the castle esc.

I tried emailing the club to see if I can join and if the pond is available to just use for fun running since it sounds like racing events are not going to happen. Haven't heard back yet.

Hope your doing well and work has eased up on you so you can play more

                  Pete

I finally got by the club lake myself recently for only the second time since you and I were there together many months ago. Work is crazy busy, and i'm spending most of my time on your jets at 30K

I was during the weekday, and only for about 2 hours, but both my cat and mono were running great. Finally found a prop that will run my Mono all day long at 60mph, and the electronics come back well within normal temp range. Ive also started running it on my tri-blade SAW prop on 8S, and Im running out of lake and haven't made beyond 80% throttle so far, but still hit 88 mph!

One of these days we can hopefully meet up again and see yours run if the lake situation gets worked out

Congratulations on getting your boats running so well and so fast. It seems like pulling off that kind of speed and reliability is a real art form !

Finding a bigger pond wont be easy. I thought a lake like Jackson would be a good idea but nope, way too wavy for the speeds we want to go even in a little cove.

I would really like to meet up again, is the club lake closed until further notice ?

That water is pretty rough for sure so get a day when it is "flat" and there will be a big difference.
Also you should try not to run at half throttle all the time, run it flat out or nothing at all as it does tax the ESC pretty hard.
PT-45, 109mph, finally gave up after last bad crash
                        H&M 1/8 Miss Bud 73 mph
                        Chris Craft 16 mph

no, it's still open and guys are running on it, but we just don't have an official deal with the new owners at the moment

Tony - that’s good to hear. Hopefully they work out an agreement
Gary - yep I have to get use to what calm water looks like ! It looked smooth until that boat started moving!
Inhad no idea that part throttle on an ESC was a tough place for it to live. Did some reading and sure enough I was beating it when I thought I was taking it easy on the whole system. I don’t think I’m ready for full speed but that will come once I get it running again. I sent in the dead EZ Run Max6 G2 ESC to Hobbywing. Tony, your right everything they sent me about the warranty and how it will go seemed to be putting the blame on me. We shall see, if they fix it then I’m only out shipping (15$) and time. Still kinda lame since it only ran one time. If they say it’s not a warranty failure then they can keep it and I’ll go with Castle.

Well I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, Hobbywing sent me a brand new replacement ESC all I had to do was cover the $12 shipping. They said they couldn?t determine the exact cause of the damage but warned me about over taxing the esc with Amps and temps. I got the new one mounted back in the boat and took it out yesterday. I know I have no idea how to properly drive this type of boat, and these speeds are really new to me. If you guys could watch this video of it running and after you get done laughing at my driving abilities, could you give and opinion on how the boat is doing on the water? I?m not sure what to look for. It?s quick, but I know I?m running too much rudder it needs to be trimmed down but other than that how can I tell if the rest of the boat is setup correctly. It?s pulling a lot of amps, the esc said it was in the 340 range a few parts of a second here and there. Most of the time it was below 200 but I was not at 100% throttle most of the time either. I?m sure that is what got the esc hot. The lake temp was really warm too so the cooling of the water was less than ideal. Do I need to prop the boat down a little ? If so how do I figure out what prop it should get? Or do I need a better esc? One that can deal with amps in the 300 range ? Any ideas I can get about how it looks would be great.

I got a chance to go to the club pond a couple of days ago. For just one pack of batteries It actually feels a little small ! This boat covers so much water so fast. It will take a lot of practice to run around the track correctly.
The hobbywing esc just isn?t up to the task. This new one keeps working at least. It shuts down due to over current after just a little running and then after it resets a little more running and it thermally shuts down and it?s recovery boat time.
The short run seemed a bit smoother. I got advice from the folks on the anything hydro?s Facebook page that shifting the cg aft a bit might help keep the prop in the water better. I moved it back 1/2 inch and it seemed better. It wanted to flip pretty easily so the next adjustment was removing the 1 degree of up in the strut. The esc wouldn?t let me try out that change on the water.
I gave up on the hobbywing and ordered an XLX2 it will be here soon. I also got in touch with a guy about another prop to try to settle the boat down and maybe lower the amp draw.
