New To This Site / Have a Few Questions

    Good Morning,
I am new to this site but not rc boating. Been in rc boats since 1978. Own several gas and nitro boats but am now wanting to test the waters in electric with a few projects.

I have a new in the original box prather 46 inch offshore. It is an epoxy hull with no stringers installed. The hull is very light as 46 inch hulls go vs fiberglass or lite layup fiberglass hulls of that size.
The freeboard of the hull is higher than some because it is a true scale of an offshore hull. I love its lines and had owned one in the 1980s with a 90 picco in it.
This will be a sport only project. Here are my questions:

    1. Please tell me what size brushless motor, and esc I need to put this hull in the 40mph range. The hull with a nitro becomes unstable at 50 so I want to stay in the 40 range
    2. What lipo battery setup do I need for the recommended package above. I have lipos now I use with a monster truck, e-maxx brushless system.
    3. Tips on mounting the recommended motor. Also what size flex cable is recommended with the package you recommend. I can make the hull surface or sub surface drive. I understand the effect of the subsurface setup on power, speed, etc. I can go either way.

Your help, and guidance in this project is much appreciated!!
IT will be good to network with all of you. I look forward to that!!!!!

    Curt

        1) LMT 3080 12T approx $800.00 A high turn motor like this will yield around 6 minute run times.
        2) Castle Hydra HV 180, approx $400.00
        3) 4 packs of 5S, 5000mAh 25-30C Lipos approx $1100.00

        Scared yet!!!!!!

        Run a 1/4" drive.

If you haven't passed out yet from sticker shock, I'm sure more people will have other ideas for your project.

Actually, that is conservative for a Prather 46" hull. Gearboxes and Ni-MH will bring the cost down but with the downsides of that technology. Large hulls are expensive to power. If you want to test the waters of FE boating. A DF 33" or Titan is a good choice...$700-$1000

I gave you one of the 3 things you asked

I'm sure others will chime in with slightly less expenxive options, but you still need to get ready to spend some serious money.

Oh Yeah, I almost forgot, one or 2 chargers for the batteries,,100-200 bucks on top of everything else

Do you know the weight of the hull? There are many option out there, weight is a big factor..

Well, a top end set up would go like this:

                  Neu 2230 - $800
                  Schulze 40.160 - $850
                  30C 6,000 mAh packs x4 - $1,200 total

$2,850 to $3,000 for boat ESC and 1 set of packs

Then add in for chargers - say two Hyperion DUO2 chargers and other stuff needed for FE boating and you are looking at between $3,500 to maybe $4,000 to get a large boat running.

Like has been said, get a 33 inch mono or whatever running on 4S power and got 50 mph for WAAAAY less money.

Also - a large and expensive 10S2P boat is NOT the place to learn about FE. Irrespective of your boating experience, there is a good deal of information and technique that needs to be learned in order to safely operate FE boats. Especially large one.

I have a quality charger I use for my lipos in my emaxx. Doesn't plettenberg make some good motors. I was looking at their list of motors for marine use and they are not in the 800 price range. I would put a pletty against any neu motor for monster car purposes. In fact they smoke the neus.

What brand of quality charger? Car and boat equations do not mix, A boat motor will see huge amperage and voltage demands. The car motor has an easy time of it. Search this site and you will see the demands that FE boating puts on the ESC, batteries and motors.

Pletty motors are some of the best in the world. German made and they have a complete line of marine motors too.
What are the specs of a motor I would need to get they epoxy offshore to 40mph? I am not looking to go 60 this boat will not handle it. As for the weight of this hull. I have had many fiber glass hulls that are light layup in my hands over the years at boat races. This hull is lighter by a mile than a light layup. Weight well I would need to get it out of storage, openup the new box and weigh it for you. Lets just say it is lighter than any fg light layup 46 inch out there

The other guys have given you proven setups . There are also some big outrunners around that are very inexpensive. There is another thread on the board about an inexpensive esc also. You can do an esc and motor for about $400. The problem is this is the "less" expensive route which is very untested at the moment. So reliability is not known.
