    Traxxas blast upgrade

Hey all. A friend of mine had a Traxxas blast he wants me to try and upgrade to make faster. I want to make it brushless and upgrade the driveshaft with the octura shaft ose sells. Thinking a 3200kv motor on 2s. Anyone ever upgrade a blast? I also wanna install turn fins and trim tabs to stabilize it for higher speeds. Any advice is appreciated.

I had one long ago. 3500kv on 2S. I didn?t do turn fins or trim tabs, but should have. Wasn?t the most stable boat without that hardware with the extra speed.

The plastic u-joint doesn?t hold up well to brushless. Consider a metal u-joint.

Yeah, I was going to do a steel ujoint, OSE sells one but recommends no more than 20k rpm. I'm looking for a more sturdy one. Do you think the trim tabs and turn fins would help? What speed did you get out of the 3500kv motor? I don't want crazy speeds but somewhere around 30mph would be good.

I just got a Blast in a trade. I added a 3300kv 4 pole outrunner to it, and have a ZTW Shark G2 50a ESC that came with the boat. I added extra seal to the ends of the ESC using E6000. I also added silicone Conformal coating to my Receiver and Servo PCBs. I got trim tabs and turn fins said to be correct size for this boat and found on these forums guides to properly placing them but have not installed them yet. I also found a link to a metal Ujoint that fits the Blast but the link has since expired 😞.
I should have everything together and ready for a little 2s test run within the next couple/few weeks. I did buy a new Traxxas Ujoint just in case the old one is worn out, wanted to start with a known new condition Ujoint at least. I saw the "upgraded to Traxxxas 550 12t Blast boat videos" and peoples seem to be happy with that as an upgrade. I have a 12t 550 & a couple xl5 and xl5hv escs (although I am worried 3s could burn out a motor brush easily and 3s could or would be to much anyway, at least the videos i saw peoples were using only 2s or NiMh packs with the 550 12t, 2s is as far as I'm planning on taking it). I only decided to go brushless because of the BL motors having less failures than the 12t motors and their brushes, even when "water broke in".
I sharpened the plastic prop & turn fins. I also made a new servo link with slightly thicker wire for more stable servo action, i hope. I am hoping I can find a metal Ujoint and maybe a metal prop. Not needing super speed or anything like that (maybe a little xtra speed), but mainly looking for a more robust platform, less or no failures. I have a cheap but cheerful, small, waterproof(resistant)GPS bike pc i am planning on placing inside the hull to see the top speed. This budget Shark ESC has Auto/Low/Hi timing settings. I am planning on using Auto timing setting, but I will try the High Timing setting at least one pass since its only a 3300kv 4 pole BL Motor and settings can be done through radio or bluetooth.
So off to read some more posts and see what I can do.

☆Finally got my Blast near completion!☆

Finally got my Blast to maybe 90-95% completion. Found a alloy prop and brass dtive dog here at Offshore Electronics. Used a dremel to cut the prop shaft and add flat spot for grub/set screw. It all fit perfect, thank you Offshore! I was wrong about the ESC, its a 60a G2. I used MG Chrmical silicone conformal waterproofing coating on everything, used non foaming clear Gorilla Glue to add a second seal to the ESC ends. Glued closed cell foam to the top and bottom of battery tray, enough that the foam fit snug against the inside of the hull to allow it to act like an inner support making the whole hull one cohesive part. Much stronger feel to it now, it doesn't bend or flex so easily anymore. I think i have room for a bilge pump between servo and ESC. I found a waterproof "beer pump" that is much smaller , higher quality, pumping volume & voltage but less amp draw than the inexpensive generic boat pumps i find everywhere so i have one ordered; poor lil pump will never see any tall frosty beer beverages!!!!! And for that i am TRULY SORRY!!! 😆 I am new at this, never had a boat before, got it in a trade, i hope i did everything right or at least well enough it works! I researched a bunch about everything i put on it. The turn/steering fins and trim tabs are from a parts kit for another boat of equal size i found at Aliexpress for $8. I sharpened the prop and even all the plastic parts pretty darn good for plastic. Bath tub test webt well, rooster tail was impressive! now for a lake drive before it gets completely cold outside!!!!!!!
I couldn't have done this, or even attempted this without the advice i found here on these forums. The knowledge of users here is excellent and helped me tremendously so I want to give a heartfelt and honest THANK YOU!!!!!
