Hmm I heard they are trying to cut costs by doing this and reducing the amount of cobalt needed.
There's a hole at the center of earth where the rest of the world sinks but i stand still...

The futures price of cobalt has almost doubled since last June, and it will almost certainly increase further. A manufacturer has to do something….

It's only superior if it stays affordable.
          Performance is always a compromise.

Changing technology is not an overnight thing, either. Definitely not in the scale they are thinking.

I think you are confusing Nickle Hydride with (NiMH) with Lithium- nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA), or the (currently dominant) cathode chemistry in the auto sector is nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) .
Both NCA and NCM cathodes uses Lithium on the Anode.
Teslas new 4680 cell is a Lithium-iron phosphate (LiFe) battery. It still uses some Nickel in the cathode, but no cobalt.
Its has less energy density than the current batteries on a cell by cell basis. At the pack level, I think its a wash.
At 56% cheaper, it more than offsets that delta.
