    Primer?

What primer does everyone use when they paint. And then what over it?

Ball turned me on to the Klasskote stuff. I use the primer, the colors, and even clear on some stuff. Really holds up to abuse too. I don't take very good care of them once they're built and the paint has never flaked off on me ever.

My biggest complaint about any of the paint gun stuff is that I don't actually own enough compressor to run a HVLP gun. Gonna try an LVLP gun in a few weeks.

BTW Klasskote will color match for you too. You can go the home depot and grab swatches. Find something you like and give them the code. They can get really close. That blue on all Ty's boats is Behr Aztec Blue.

        Howard,

The best primer will likely be from the same brand your paint is. So if you want to spray Klasskote then use their primer. Klasskote is the closest thing to the older K&B epoxy paint which is very durable but only available in standard colors (i.e. not iridescent, pearl, etc). Brian turned me onto Createx water based paint. https://createxcolors.com/. They have appropriate primers for their paints. If you want an iridescent, pearl, metallic, neon color take a look at their website. Pretty sure you can request a color catalogue which has good swatches to reference. compared to epoxy paint the water based paint is more inexpensive but a little more difficult to shoot. It does require a decent airbrush or HVLP gun and some practice. Createx also have color matched primers so if you are painting a yellow boat you can use a yellow primer so you don't need as much paint to get to color depth.

for the clear, I am using a 2k polyurethane based automotive clear from a company called Southern Polyurethanes. https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/clear Shoots very nice and is reasonably priced.

These are all createx painted boats.

Tyler, what do you use on a fresh PT hull for pinhole prep/fix? I always had a hard time with that.

Ray, I use the vinyl spackle that comes in pink and dries white. Think this is what Phil recommends. Then use a Scotchbrite pad so you don't sand new holes loose. Works killer. It's not a filler. Just for the pinholes.

I'm too lazy to actually mix paint. Sticking with Rustoleum I guess. BTW acquired Alans Original Raptor Rigger. One of the first ones with a shoe and wood sponsons. Fixed it last year and it sank. Sat on the bottom of the pond all winter until a fisherman hooked it and left it on the dock for us. 4 months on the bottom and it still worked and the Battery charged. Paint was all messed up though so that's what I'm reworking.

Good to hear it was recovered. I think I have seen pics of this boat from many years ago. If you want cheap and easy, stick with your Krylon and pick up some Spray Max 2K clear coat. It's a 2k clear in a spray paint can. It's 90% as good as the fancy ones and you will be happy.

Ty's boat belonged to Haynes. It's been sunk three times now I think. I still haven't fixed it from the last disaster.

Tyler....I use Rustoleum (not the x2) I see online people only wait 10 minutes to top coat it with 2k clear....I have had no luck doing that it gators. Once I coat it how long would you wait to use the 2k and what is the prep?

                        Howard,

I would wait several days even with good air circulation to ensure the paint is cured before applying clear. You should not have to wetsand or buff with the Rustoleum.
