    Rudder length question

Is there any rule-of-thumb for determining a good rudder length (depth) on a mono hull? I guess that I'm looking for the least resistance (thus best speed) without losing stability or steering.

Also, regarding rudder bracket length, is it better to have the leading edge ahead of the prop, alongside of the prop, or behind the prop?

So what particular mono are you asking about?
Length: buy two, slowly cut the first down in til too short. Then cut the second one almost as much
Setback: depends. Hull, application, driving style.

Sorry no rules of thumb on a generic hull question.

Thanks. Just trying to avoid trial-and-error, and sacrificing one rudder. Might do this someday.

Regarding setback: All of my boats are deep vee mono's for oval racing. P-lim is an OSE Raider, P is a Dominator, and Q is a Delta Force 45 Mk 2.

As far as setback, I generally start with leading edge of rudder a drive dog.. but certain hulls or driving styles may want it farther back.
You really want your rudder as short as feasibly possible. And it also depends on weight distribution and strut height. So many variables, it makes rules of thumb pretty sloppy.

Stinger lenght is 1/10 of hull lenght, the rudder lenght is +30mm than the V hull, look

1-1/2-2 inch below the tip of the prop as a rule of thumb

Keep cool papy. Total stinger lenght, propeller included is 1/10 of hull lenght.

For the blade it must be 2 or 3 cm under the V.
