    Soldering

:p I absolutely am terrible at soldering. I can sweat copper like nothing. Soldering wire though, another story. Anyone want ta solder Deans on my batts? Or how about some exact tips on soldering? thanks

Use a 150 watt digital iron for small wires and a 250 watt gun for deans. I am impaitent thats why I like the gun. Remember to heat the work but not over heat deans. Tin the prongs and wire first. Then heat the connector and apply the wire. You will get the hang of it quick. A third hand tool works great. 12 bucks at radio shack.

i like to use solder with flux already in it... remember to pre- tin both the connector and the wire, then as tom said... heat the work... once solder is melted and looks runny slap the wire to it.... perfect.

To solder the deans is not bad. Get everything ready. and scratch up the tabs on the plug. Dab everything with a little flux, tabs and wire. (remember to slip the shrink rap on the wire. I use a simple 10 dollar 45 watt gun. Place the tip on the tab and hit it with the solder anfter it melts just sort of slide the gun accross the tab, ok its tinned, do both tabs. Now place the tip of the gun on the tip of the wire and melt the solder into the wire, you will see it run in. Now, of coarse something is holding the plug, now reflux everything. Tip of gun on the tinned tab /melt it then push the tinned wire onto the tab and place the soldering tip ontop of the wire. You will see it mush and melt together, No more solder was needed. Hold the wire inplace and your done. Check the pos and neg leads are right and shrink wrap it.

The key to deans is a Weller 40 or 80 watt iron and a vise to hold the plug.
I say weller because in the past I have tried other 40, 60 and 80 watt irons and NONE of them even came close to the heat of a Weller 40. Now I'm sure there are other good low cost irons out there. But I know for sure a weller will work every time. The reason for the vise is obvious, but without a vise lots of times I would over heat the plug and distort the plastic which will cause a poor connection when used.

I just want to stress again..if you use a gun be carfull!! My gun gets the work hot fast but will wreck the connectors just as fast. I paid 69 dollars for the didital soldering station form radio shack. It was reasonable. I seen wellers @ the HomeDepot the last time I was there for much less. I think Steven may stock them also. Steven, do you recomend a vice over the thrid hand tool?

i have a weller 150 watt soldering gun....it works great and takes just a few seconds to heat up....it was a worthwhile buy....i find it good to practice on some scrap wire and even buy some deans connectors to practice on..i did and t took me about a day to learn to solder...

I dont stock the stations, I do have the 80's only because of the hammer tip. I will look tonight for the name of the station I use. I bought a Asian station about 6 years ago and its build tons of packs and soldered tons of wire and its still going strong.

So I soldered deans on one battery so far. another supplier other than ose sent only female when I ordered pairs// oh well. Just have one more question. Im not against getting a new iron but why 80 watt? I read a dremel 35watt and it said up to 1050 degrees. Is the wattage to heat larger tips?

Funny you bring it up. I am in the middle of an unyet anounced little upgrade:D with involves a but load of soldeing. Now I gota state upfront for the record. I enjoy soldering as much as being kicked in the balls:D. But when I have to do it I ues as many a watt iron or gun as I can. I find they heat the work much quicker. I HATE waiting on a joint to heat up. The draw back for me with the gun is wreckin connectors once and a while. But when it comes to the big bullet connectors more watts means less cussin for me:D.

the 80w irons hold a lot of heat so they don't cool down as much or as fast as the smaller irons. this lets you solder heavier wire quicker w/o melting the insulation(or batt.s w/o melting the 'vents') a 35-40w iron should nicely for deans plugs. remember let the plug cool down to room temp between opperations(tin the connection, let cool, attach wire, let cool. repeat as nessessary)
