    Motor RPM

Back when I quit the hobby about 6 years ago, it seemed that the rpm golden rule was to run around the 30-35k rpm mark so, I ran most of my setups on a 2200kv motor running 4s2p which ran fast and cool.

Now i see a bunch of people running the same motors on 6s which run at crazy rpms. Even manufacturer are promoting 6s in 2000kv setups which got traxxas in trouble when they first launched the spartan.

    What gives?

Is the equipment that much better or is it still the same rule and people just realized they are going to blow their gear up if run for any length of time on 6s?

Just wondering, I enjoy tuning so Ill continue to see how fast I can go on 4s. Especially 4s2p were you can use lower c rated batts with great results.

Not much change in equipment, except that props are much more efficient (which helps low rpm setups). IMO a few folks have promoted high rpm and were successful because 1) they really knew what they were doing, 2) they were lucky, or 3) they lied about their success. Running high rpm makes setup more critical, and IMO is not such a good idea for newbies especially. ESCs burn up due to excess heat, and high Kv and voltage generate much more heat if the prop, setup or running conditions aren't just right. I have made official 6S sport hydro SAW passes near 100mph (99 actually) with rpm under 30,000 rpm, so excessive rpm isn't always needed to go fast. Bottom line - it’s the current fad.

The golden rule hasn't changed at all and like Fluid very well pointed out lot of people burn their equipments because they ignore the basics of Fe .I have seen lot of youtube videos with people detonating their boats and I'm pretty sure they don't survive too much after their few "fast passes".I only run saw riggers on 6S and I had very few issues till now because I respect the running time of my set ups,I check out the datalogging of my runs and I'm always impressed how amps can hit the ruff in a glimpse! This site is the main souce of information that most of us can have .

Thank guys, i figured the rules were still in place. Fluid, the 99 is impressive. I've always wanted to build a 100 mph boat.

GRS, thanks again for your input and knowledge. I'm just getting back into it and need all the help I can get.

I used to run with a guy that wanted to over power everything and it drove him crazy that my highly tuned 4s setups would outrun him or I'd be running while he was working on whatever he had just smoked.

        Thanks again.

I started off in FE using high kv motors thinking that was the go to go fast but after some test runs with hot motors / esc,s and batteries it was advised by fellow forum members to go lower in the kv range and prop up abit. Doing as i was told my rigs now run cool and perform very well for oval class racing.

            Fluid

You've been helping me for years even before my 6 year break in the hobby and I just notices in your profile that you are also a shooter.

If you ever make it to Dallas, you will have some fun on me.

This is my best buds range.
