I use the 201 and 301, essentially the same thing. The 101 runs on AAA batteries. The 201 uses a proprietary charger cable, so you're screwed if you loose it or buy one without it. The 301 charges via a standard USB cable. They're rated as water resistant, but I put them in a zip-lock back if its not one of my drier boats. I've been happy with mine, they serve their purpose. Accuracy when compared with car GPS and phone nav software is all within spec.
I looking for used GPS units on Ebay, how good does the Garmin Forerunner 101 work? Is it worth it if I find one for $40-50 on Ebay?
Thanks
The 101 is a good but not a great GPS. It is accurate and runs on 2 AAA batteries, so that means it's ready 24/7. The only downside to the 101 is that it isn't shock resistant although some on youtube people have made shock resistant by adding foam and tape to the back of the unit. I have rolled a couple of boats while using the 101 and when I got the boat back to shore the gps the memory had been cleared. I still have my 101 and use it every once in a while. If you can get it for around $40.00 I would go for it. If not go for the Dynamite linked above which in my opinion is more accurate than the Garmin due to having a faster processor

I believe the OP asked about the 101.....NOT the 201 or 301..
the problem with the 101 has nothing to do with shock resistance .the reason yours came back with memory cleared after a rough ride is the batteries .i went thru this with mine .
the batteries will temp lose contact during a rough ride and the gps will shut off .i fixed mine by spreading the battery connectors for a tighter fit and adding a little bit of folded paper under the battery door to hold the batteries tighter .
havent had a problem since i did that .
but if you can get the 201 or 301 for near the same price i would go that way due to this issue .
volantex vector pro ,proboat veles 29 , traxxas spartan, hobbyking/tfl pursuit ,ft009 with rescue rigging

Yes, that's what I experienced. The batteries would move from the shock of the impact and turn the unit off. I had the same issues that this guy had in the video below. His video below shows a simple fix for it. The other Garmin's units the batteries wires are soldered and don't suffer from this issue.
