    Y or D wind

How is one to know witch one a motor is if the mfg does not state on their product description or spec sheet? Should this not be standard like/ along with kv/r rating? Turnigy XK2845-1980kv Y or D also Turnigy Aquastar 3660-2050kv Y or D? How is one to know where to set motor timing if they don't tell you the wind? Aquacraft, ProBoat don't tell you the winds on their motors either why is this so top secret?

A few motor makers only offer one wind across their product line, Castle for instance only offered Wye winds. Otherwise only the maker can tell you. I agree, providing this basic information should be mandatory.

I agree, it’s important information. I guess just two choices, use the “Auto” timing setting available on most ESC’s (not my favorite choice) or replace the motor with one that comes with a full spec sheet.

Typically inexpensive motors end up D winds because it's easier to wind and finish without making a solder joint to the windings in the rear of the motor before the leads come out.

If you run it on zero degrees timing only Y winds should get hot with a reasonable prop and a boat properly setup.

If you open the motors rear cover you can see if there is a solder joint on the windings covered in heat shrink. D winds have no solder joint by virtue of there design. Some motors are open enough to see inside.

Hmmmm, define “inexpensive” Ray. All the current 4S ‘spec’ motors from AquaCraft and ProBoat are Wye winds.

And they my friend are far more expensive than $36.00. You can squeeze a couple 1500kv PB motors for $54 ($64 now) from GoNitro on Ebay but that's the only place since they retail at about $70 no?

So I should jest assume cheep Turnigy motors are d winds, set timing at 0 ?

To the OP - FWIW, a HobbyKing product specialist told me those motors are Wye winds. So are their $13 to $20 outrunners, some very inexpensive brushless motors. It is best not to make assumptions about motor winds, go to the maker and ask rather than getting guesses from posts on the Internet.

I stand corrected. I've badgered them over and over and not got an answer and gave up.

now the magic question about Y versus D winds. if both motors were say 3674 - 2200 kv,s which would be the faster motor , the Y or D wind motor?

No speed difference if operated on the same battery voltage. KV determines speed, not the winding configurations. The Y winding can be a bit more efficient to operate if set up properly.

Lots of testing by enlightened aircraft racers has shown that it is the Kv which matters, not the wind type. Given that the motor construction is the same for both of course.
