    Rudder placement on transom

On forums there is no such thing as a 'stupid' question (apparently). My present project involves a 28 inch shallow vee mono to which I am fitting a stinger and side mounted rudder. I notice that it seems all boats with side mounted rudders have the rudder mounted to the right of the stinger/strut. Now I assume that there is a reason for this (perhaps to do with prop rotation).

My mono hull has a slanted transom angled at about 60 degrees to the waterline. I searched far and wide and the only suitable rudder that I could find was too large for this hull. The criteria that I had in looking at rudders was that the transom mount bracket had to re removable from the rest of the rudder assembly as the rudder mount needed to be modified to allow the transom mount to sit at the 60 degree angle and yet have the rudder mount arm laying horizontal. I hope this makes sense.

I am awaiting a decision on a suitable stinger that can accommodate the angled transom but feel that if the rudder is mounted to the right side of the stinger location then this will place the rudder almost to the extreme right side of the transom. If I could mount the rudder to the left side of the stinger then I feel that this would allow a more suitable location. However, this is contrary to basically every other boat that I have seen with a stinger drive.

I will be using a conventional right hand propellor. Will a left side mounted rudder cause turning issues, please?

Perhaps this will help explain the rudder transom mount alteration.

A mock up with the rudder positioned on the left side showed that on right turns the rudder would contact where I believe the propellor would be positioned using a 78 mm stinger. It looks like the rudder will need to be placed on the right side of the transom.

Just mount the Stinger firstly then position the rudder [ right side starboard ] so theres enough clearance between the rudder when its full left with the prop on shaft. i would think abit over 2 inches clearance should be right. yes mount the rudder on the right hand side of transom not the left side. i like what you have done to fit this rudder bracket to transom.

Racers turn right, and monos lean into corners like motorbikes, so if the rudder is on the right it goes deeper in the turn when you need it deeper, but if it is on the left it gets shallower just when you need it the most. If you are not racing and want to turn both ways equally a central rudder is best, but there is some drag that comes with it, and some report on centre steering issues.

Maybe consider using a strut and bracket instead of a stinger, no issues with angle then.

Many thanks gents. I still need to fit a second mount bolt to the transom mount plate but will need to await placement on the transom to ensure the rudder is vertical.

If you need the "L" bracket to face the other direction, then flip the mounting bracket over. Don't know if this would help.

                  Yes these are quite adjustable.

BTW Old school; I am dying to see this hull that has a leaned forward transom. My memory is racking trying to remember such a hull.

Refer this thread. The hull is over twenty years old and was originally a 540 brushed skeg drive. I wanted to build as a restomod but soon realised that the stock drive setup was not going to perform so have opted for a stinger surface drive.

I'm thinking Graupner or Robbe? I think there was another German outfit but I can't recall. No matter. A stinger and surface drive will help counter prop torque. Geez I remember a lot of that on the old prop under hull systems.
