    thrust bearing

    Hi all.Has anyone had a thrust bearing melt?what would cause this?i had brand new thrust washer between motor and collet.3Piece one with red nylon bearing case.After 6 laps it melted the nylon.only thing that was hot was the collet.Boat has all new running gear and is free to spin by hand

    You don't use a thrust bearing with a nylon cage.

      yes try a full metal thrust bearing set and leave a tiny gap between the collet and motor so its not spinning all the time when these no load put on it also keep it well oiled.

            I am confused.Please explain "when there is no load on it"IMO isnt a boat always under load when running?

                there is no load on the collet to motor when the drive shaft is either not connected or the boat is out of the water. this is why you want the thrust bearing to work only when its needed not all the time , thats how these little bearings wear out quick.
