ESC size for 4060 motor ?

guys, what would be a suitable and safe sized ESC to match up with a 4060 - 4d - 2450 kv motor running on 4s ?
for oval racing in a rigger not SAW. thanks.

Boat size? Expected prop size? Those are the two biggest variables to the power draw...

CraigP, thinking of the new jae 33 / fe which is abit larger than the previous jae 21/fe , prop will be around the H7 to 1450 size.

Would like to have some riggers guys chime in here... Based on what I've seen others running, a 220-280A ESC and you'll need 2p-4s pack. 7500-10000mah. That's a good sized boat and prop... That prop I would think would be the top of the size. The best way to know is to data log it once running. I run data loggers on my boats.

Those are not big props for that motor, but I would get nothing smaller than a decent 150 amp controller like the OSE Raider. A SK-180 would be better if it fits...I don't have a JAE33 to check fitment. That's a pretty big motor for that boat.

thanks Fluid. the new jae 33 is 3 3/4 inches wide afair bit wider than the 21 / fe so it looks like just about any motor or esc will fit in the tub very easy. i was mainly concerned about the amp draw this motor has [ 310 amps ] so would the 180 amp esc be ok or to play it safer use a 220 or 240 amp esc ?

That motor will only draw 310 amps if you really overload it. That's the max rating, and it won't last long if you try it. The JAEs are easy to push so for oval racing you don't need to pull over 150 amps average. If you want it for SAW racing that's something different. I run a 1415/1Y with a 200 amp Castle in mine and have never pulled over 160 amps. It's got all the speed I need and can handle in an oval heat - but then I'm not a GPS racer either.

so would the 4060 - 2450 kv motor from T.P. have more power than the Castle Neu 1415 - 2400 kv motor ? i know the t.p. has abit more kv,s as they say but has the size such as 1415 versus 4060 have much to do with things ?

Size for the TP 4060: D 39.5mm X L 94.7mm, a good 4S or 5S motor / Castle-Neu 1415: D 36.0mm X L 69.5mm, good 4S motor . . .clearly TP 4060 bigger motor and more powerful. Generally with the same diameter motor the one with the longer length will have more torque/power. Clearly the TP 4060 is bigger in diameter as well as in length. So the answer to your question is yes. However, more power is not necessarily better. The right or proper motor for the size and type of boat is key . .not always biggest or most powerful. A perfect marriage of motor/esc/boat type and size/prop size/batteries-voltage and what/how your running the boat. . .etc is the key to have a perfectly running boat and this requires trial and error with all the factors mentioned above. In your case space might be the limiting but important factor, as in most riggers because of it's narrow size, of what motor you can put in there and as well as your esc. I would get an ESC with the highest current(continuous current) not the biggest. Depending on the brand/maker a 120A from one maker might be smaller than another maker's 120A esc. Even version 2 is better and smaller than version 3 from the same maker. . .ex. Seaking 120A V2 is smaller in design and sought after than the current Seaking 120A V3 esc. You know you want oval racing so now you also have to take consideration of size of battery you can fit in there after finding the right motor and esc.. .then test what prop to use. . .go down the line of checks and balances, so to speak, until you have a stable, fast running boat that can finish in a race with lowest heat on your gear and not close to burning it up. . .which is sometimes the case, unfortunately in racing. I hope I'm making sense since I've been up 6am this morning preparing for hurricane Irma. . .so tired and I have to work in a few hours.

Thank you, I hope so too but unfortunately it will hit Florida. It's a matter if it will go through the middle of the state or more to the east coast or west coast where I am.

I have a Keps rigger with a similar footprint to a Jae33 and run a 1415 Castle with a Raider (Flycolor 150 $36 online) and 1450/1816 props. In my Mean Machine cat this motor ran 60 and going to a 1512 Castle 2650 picked me up 5 mph. The 1512 is 40X72 and fits better allowing more battery space. I have a TP 3650 2350kv in my riggernow and not much faster than the 1415, so the next test will be the 1512 in the rigger. That could stress the 150 ESC so a 180 (minimum) or above will be needed. The TP 3650 also is eating many more ma's than the Castle 1415.

Yep the 1415 is 2400 and the 1512 is 2650kv. If you can fit a40mm motor go with the 1512 in my opinion 5mph faster
