    shaft upgrade question

I am upgrading to a 3/16 flex shaft WITHOUT LINER....

question is do I need a nylon thrust washer between the strut and the drive dog just as the Genesis was when came stock

    thanks for looking

I'd say no. There should be enough distance so the drive dog NEVER touches to strut. Most use the diameter of their flex shaft as the stand-off distance. So that's 3/16" space for you.

thanks for the fast reply...I didnt think so as OSE sold me a "complete flex shaft unit" with dog and prop nuts ...just wanted to be certain.
sure like the NO liner, and it sounds better running

Yes, and no liner is less to go wrong. I got the complete unit as well on my hydro build, I've been very please with it!

do you use the same brass shaft tube when the liner is removed ?

They say the 1/4" tube is for a 3/16" flex shaft without a liner. You can also use 1/4" tube for 0.150" flex shaft with a liner. If you run a liner with 3/16" flex, I think you are supposed to use 9/32 tube. In all cases, the tube is brass or copper with a 0.014" wall thickness. Brass is preferred.

thanks for that info Ill file that, and thanks for the help and advice

my experience with RC boats to date has been outboards and the liners are definitely an issue, Im glad to have learned this system can be used without

the non liner upgrade for the K&B glow outboards was to use 1/4 inch o.d. brass tube for the 3/16 flexy . this was a proven performance upgrade as it allowed less drag on the curved drive line as the original liner drive line did cause much drag / binding .

i am going back about 20 years when this upgrade hit the scene, its a very easy mod just make sure you bend the brass tube exactly the same as channels are on both side of the leg so it just drops in on one half side . you can also drill a hole and tap a nipple if you want on the side of leg and into the brass shaft log for easy lubrication between runs.
