    Cutting a flex cable

What's the best way to cut a flex cable ,wire cutters or cut off wheel?either way I don't get a clean cut ,stir trying to learn how to solder the end ,I can solder pipe all day long but can't seem to figure out this cable ,ps,I've never tried on a new cable only used greased ones,

I use a dremel and a cutoff wheel to make the initial cut (go slow and take your time). Then I take the end of the cable and at about a 30 degree angle just sand the tip slightly on my benchtop sander to chamfer it some, helps the wires from snagging where you cut them off.

To solder yopu must have a clean cable, follow the instructions in the video, then to solder the end I use a crucible full of solder, see link below:

    Should come out like this:

Gosh, I gotta make me one of them thar crucible thingies. It looks like a 3/4" pipe cap with the threads ground off. Does it have to be iron??? I have some galvanized caps lying around. I also like the way he made a stand for it. I have a galvanized threaded rod, and a tap, and die set, would that work??? Could probably just use a piece of 2x6 for a base. Care to chime in here Revolt Flash?

I had my uncle make mine, I'll grab a picture of it tonight. I also should note that when I use mine I have it on a piece of ceramic tile and about a 2" cutting board, that crucible gets crazy hot!

Use a 1/2 pipe cap ,not galvanized ,weld a 4" bolt to the cap then weld the bolt to a 3x3 piece of steel ,lowes sells foundation washers that are square and thick ,you can buy it all there ,

A galvanized cap will work as long as it is deep enough. About 1 1/2 inches. Using galvanize just be careful of the fumes it might put off if any.

I soldered the ends of my flex cables for years, sometimes it was a struggle but regardless I never liked heating the cable, risking changing the wire temper and applying corrosive flux. About 15 years ago I stopped soldering cables altogether, using Locktite instead. Since I started doing this I have never had a cable unwind, or break due to weakened windings. Disclaimer - I only use collet cable connectors, not set screws. The latter should be soldered, IMO at least.

That vid is cool, can also make the same thing with a piece of 1/2" copper pipe ,smash the end and put it in a vice ,
