    esc and timing issues

    Hi forum members,

I burned up 2 esc's recently because of overheating problems. Default settings don't work for all motors/esc's. Should I set my esc's to 0 degrees, run the boat and then take heat readings. If they are low then should I go up 2-4 degrees and continue my heat readings? Let me give you a specific set up and get some advice from you senior members. I have 29" hydro. I'm using a Leopard X2 3660 motor...3180kv....4.5D. The ESC is a 180A version 3. I use a 3/16 flex drive, an Octura 442 prop and I run either 1 3s or 4s lipo..5000mah. Where should I be on my timing for this set up?

    thanks,

    don

    First thing I see is a 3180kv motor. on 3S = over 40,00RPM on 4S = over 53,000RPM

You are running a "D" wind motor - 0 degrees timing
Anything above that well only cause heat, with NO change to RPM

Sometimes when an ESC goes it will also hurt the motor, so every ESC you connect to it afterword hurts the new ESC.

You say you are running a Hydro, is that a Sport Hydro or a Rigger?

As said 4s is way way to high on that motor, 3s is high enough but doable providing the boat isn't running to wet. The default on that esc is 15 degrees again to high, set it to 0 degrees. What make battery & c rating is it.

Thats an awfully high KV motor for your setup, not surprised the ESC's aren't holding up I've burned up a few v3's it doesn't take much. My 24" delta force hydro runs a 3674 2200kv and v3 180 and it will get pretty warm after a hard 6-8 minute run with a 442 or 445 prop
