Thrust washers and wire drive

I was wondering do you need to use a thrust washer between the drive dog and strut or is it ok to run a wire drive with out one. Also if its better to use one how do you know how set the preload on the thrust bearing.

I run thrust washers on all my boats, flexi, wire or solid shaft. I like the load to be on the strut and not the engine.
