I would recommend you try to get the antenna outside of the radio box and preferably pointed vertically. If the antenna end is parallel to the lid and inside the box you will not have great range. It would better if you taped the antenna to the inside of the wood tub pointed vertically if you did not want to run the antenna externally.

You can always try it as you suggested with proper failsafes and see how far your range is.

Interesting! Pretty new to this stuff. I was about ready to glue an antenna tube flat underneath my deck on my new build. So you are basically saying the antenna (the working end) needs to be vertical? If I was to mount the antenna inside the hull how much does cf cloth up the sides and transom affect it? Does the antenna end need to be higher than the cf? My hatch and deck are just fg.

Jamey in a full c,f hull it is well known that this kind of material blocks some signals like GPS and can interfere with the radio range.Of course antenna's radio going outside is the safe option but I have some f.g riggers with c.f lids running with no issues with the antenna underneath them. What Tylers said is good to avoid troubles even in a wood boat.Gill

The antennae work best when the working end is vertical. CF will degrade the signal where as FG will not degrade as much. In boats were the antenna does not extend outside I try to tape them vertically inside the box preferably away from servo's or batteries. If you are driving your boat long distances away from the point where you are standing it is advisable to get the antenna out of the box, the higher the better.

Yeah function before form as much as I hate having an external antenna it is the best option. Thanks!

yes tyler, i was going to run it thru the antenna tube out the boat. attaching the reciever to the underside of the lid gives me more antenna sticking out of the radio box.
