prop advice for my drifter cat

    hey guys,

i bought an aero & marine 36" drifter cat from the swap shop forum and am in the process of upgrading the motor and esc.
i was running it with a feigao 9xl, hydra 120 esc , 6s lipo and an octura x642 prop.

im going to be buying either the hydra 180 hv esc or the hydra 240 hv esc to run with a lehner 2280 motor . im planning on running 8-10s lipos with this setup.

i know after upgrading ill need to go with a much bigger prop .

any advice on which octura prop would work best with this setup?

    thanks

9XL on 6S with an X442?? I've been told by many not to even run a 442 on my 8XL on 4S in a 26" cat! How are your temps after a run?? It might be time for me to make some changes to my setup if you are getting away with it :).

        re my cat setup

when i first ran the boat the motor had a coil style water jacket and guys said they dont cool enough. after i ran it my motor temp was over 150. the speed control wasnt even at 100.

i installed a better cooling jacket for the motor and ran it again. motor temps dropped over 25 degrees. once again the esc was below 100

im not using an octura x442 prop im using an octura x642 prop.

i need to know whats a good size prop running my new setup.

That prop has even more pitch. I don't know how you haven't nuked the thing yet! Should have asked though- is this direct drive, or does it use a trans?

I spoke with thrash about this earlier and he has a 1.57:1 gearbox.

OK, that explains it all :D. I was thinking he was doing this with a direct drive-

re prop advice for my cat

when i install my lehner motor and the hydra hv 240 ill probably switch it over to direct drive.

can anyone suggest a good prop to run with the above setup on 8-10s lipo?

No, because you have not told us the motor you will use. Lehner makes a lot of 2280s with Kvs from 1480 to 185 rpm - which is it? The motor Kv will determine the prop size. So will the gear ratio - will you still run a gear box? And is it 8S or 10S? That matters too. We want to help you, but you have to tell us enough information, we won't "guess" for you.

re prop advice for my cat

thanks john for reminding me how many turn the lehner was. lol

i will be running direct drive with the lehner motor and 8s lipos to start.

according to the lehner motor chart my motor has an output of 569 rpms per volt.

That's a pretty low Kv for 8S, your running motor speed will be on the order of just 17,000 rpm. With an x648 prop you'll be running in the 40 mph range, but run time should be long. You could try a y557 but that's a pretty large prop for a 2280. Theoretical speed would then be around 5 mph higher. For 10S, the speeds would be in the 50 mph range, assuming the cat was perfectly trimmed.

Why did you choose the 2280/13 motor? A 7- or 8-turn 2280 would be more appropriate if you wanted speeds in the 60+ mph range on 8S.

                          re lehner motor

i went with the 13 turn motor because a fellow offshore electrics member gave me a really good deal on it.

he had it in a 1/8 hydro running 10s lipo and was getting speeds in the low 50s.

i figured in a smaller cat she should be close to 60 mph with a good prop and 8s lipos

ill find out once i have everything in and take it on the water.
