Ever cut yourself badly on a rudder?

Well I just did. So bad I didn't want to look at it. I was pulling the strut off the brass tube and it all of a sudden let go so all the force I was using to pull, pulled my pinkie finger into the rudder. Sounds like I sliced an apple in half. I thought omg, I hope I didn't cut it off! My rudder on this boat is so sharp it will shave to give you an idea. Ran inside holding the huge flap of skin together with a rag and had my some bandage it up. Whew. Probably needs stitches but I stopped the bleeding. This isn't the first time I've cut myself on a rudder, turn fin or prop. Just the worst. Probably the worst cut I've had. I actually felt a little whoosey and blood and stuff don't bother me.

Anyway, I came up with a simple and cheap solution (the initial idea was from Colby (powerdemon) about making some sort of protective cover. When he said that I instantly though of large heat shrink. Got plenty of that but I figured once it was shrunk on the rudder it would stick and not come off. Well easily enough I figured out that you cust an extra inch or so longer than the rudder. Slide it on. Heat it up and then grab the extra with a rag and slide it off while it's still hot. Then slide it on and off a couple times while it cools. Instant finger and hand saver on the cheap. Same thing for turn fins. Now I need some prop socks and I'll stop cutting myself! Lol

I know the feeling... and I use knife blades for my rudders... I just stick the rudder in a piece of pool noodle, about 3-4cm longer, this way it also helps protect the prop from contact with the table or other surfaces.
If you use the heat shrink version, get the blade soaked in WD40 before applying heat and it will come off easy even at full shrink.
