Spektrum receiver in all carbon hull? Which one?

    Hi guys,

I have an all carbon fiber Radtek hull and hatch. Anyone have good luck with one of the new Spektrum receivers in a carbon hull? If so, which one? I know I have to run the antenna outside the hull. Thanks!

I have a Radtek Mystic 25 that is the current N2-Cat SAW record holder for NAMBA, and I run a Spektrum MR3000 with DX3R-Pro in it without any issues. I do, however, run BOTH antennas out... the shorter one at a 90-degree angle to the main antenna, just to be safe.

I never, however, had any issues with just having the main antenna out.

If you have a complete newer Spektrum system, you shouldn't have any issues with a DX4S or DX4R and one of the DSMX surface receivers.

      Hi Darin,
Are the MR3000 discontinued? Any experience with the new ones in a carbon hull? Looks like they are the same for boats and cars now? I too always had luck with the MR3000s.

Have had a range problem in a cf Ariane 2 with the SR410, even with entire antenna extended in the tube. MR 200 worked well with one antenna extended (the long one). Currently using an SR415, which is OK. I just don't know if that 410 was bad, have not tried it in another boat yet.

Good question. The MR200 and SR410 were on a 2 year old DX4C, and the SR415 came with a new DX4S.

I understand, from some of your previous posts, that early DX4C's worked with the MR200, but not the later DX4C's. So mine must be one of the earlier batches.

When I lost faith in the DX4C & SR410 combination, I upgraded to the DX4S & SR415. Most of my non-CF boats have the SR410. So I am using the DX4S for race boats and the DX4C for sport boats.

Side note: When I started having range issues, I also tried a 4.8v ni-cd receiver pack. That eliminated the possibility of brownouts. But the range problem remained.

My experience thus far has been this: Everything needs to be kept in the same "generational" version...

In other words... If you are running MR-series RXs, you should be running either the DX3S, DX3R-Pro, or DX3C. These are all "DSM-Marine" compatible.

If you are running one of the newer DSMR or DSMX Transmitters, i.e.: DX4S, DX4R-Pro, DX4C, You will have better luck running with the newer SR210, SR310, SR415, etc., RXs.

Don't worry if you are having trouble keeping all that straight... so am I...

For my SAW stuff, I still use my MR3000's with my DX3R-Pro. Seems rock solid reliable.

At some point, if I can figure out how to get the antenna out of the hull, I'm going to switch to a stick radio for SAW. However, the RXs have a small booster on the antenna lead that won't allow a normal antenna tube.

                Hi Darin,

I have a dx3s but with the dsm boat sticker in the back. The MR series receivers are gone. Any ideas in my case?

                Thanks!

When I had my Carbon 1/10th scale I used a hole saw and cut a 3/4 inch hole where the antenna would exit. Then I filled it in with glass so the antenna would not contact the carbon fiber and did not have any problems with the older Spektrum receiver I was using. This was before the boat receivers came out.
