    timming setup

    Hi guys, I'm running Feigao 9XL motor with a 100amp Turnigy Sentilon HV ESC . 3S 11.1v 2200mAh 2P parallel Lipo. X642 prop in a 32" cat. I did a maiden test run yesterday for about 10mins. It flies, big rooster tail..... However, the motor, esc, and lipo batt were hotter than i think it should be. I had set timming on high prior to the maiden run. So, should the timming be on low or medium setting? BTW,I did some readings on another forum, and someone says set timming on low for in runner motor, and high for out runner motor. Please advice. Thanks.

    For a two pole motor I would have tried it on Low first and after the runs if it was cold then possibly bump up the timing a little at a time. 10 min is ALOT of run time too, I bet if you cut that in half everything will be much cooler.

      Forget what "someone" said, inrunners are not all alike and they can have very different timing needs. For sport running the timing on Feigao motors should normally be on low, maybe medium if the heat isn't bad. For racing the timing needs to be higher since the optimum timing depends on the amp draw - more amp draw = more timing.

      But like Ray said, you are running for too long a time - although I doubt you are actually running for ten minutes. If that was the case you'd only be drawing an average of 25 amps, not enough for a 'big rooster tail'. If you insist on running for ten minutes, prop down, reduce the timing, and watercool everything. How hot were the motor, ESC and packs? All can tolerate 135F without problems. Over 150 and you're in trouble.

        how are you checking your temps. if even it only takes you 1 minute to take the boat out of the water and check the temp the motor and esc will heat soak in that time. i have recorded temps on a data logger and seen the temp go from 95 deg f while running to 120 1 minute after stopping

          It doesn't matter. What matters is the maximum temperature the motor/ESC/cells attain. If it takes 1 minute to untape and check, and the motor is 160F, then it is too hot and has probably been damaged. Prop down or shorten the run time.
