    ESC Problems

    Some times I love a mystery.
    Not today !
    I have a Mystery 200A ESC, it has run great for a couple of months. I put it in an older boat of mine and ran it on the lake, the hatch leaked a little, the ESC stopped running.
    I did the usual. Soaked it in Alcohol and baked it in the oven for a couple of hours.
    After it cooled I hooked it up. It played its little tune and the motor started, rpms came up then it died, in like 5 seconds. No further response until I disconnected the battery and then reconnected it. Same as last time, tune played motor started and died. All this was on 4s which is what I have been running.
    I baked it again and was trying it out in the boat, just out of curiosity I hooked it up to 6s. It ran normally, it seemed just fine, on the bench I haven't tried it in the water.
    "Mystery" It still will not run on 4s.
    Any one have any Ideas??
    I have no clue as to programing the thing it came with no paperwork, none.

        Take it completely apart, look at the component board and look for black colored corrosion on component's soldering leads. Take a small brush, the ones they sell at plumbing stores for spreading resin, dunk the brush in alcohol or better yet, use real electronics cleaner / degreaser and clean the oxidation off the board. If there are small connectors on the board, clean them too. If you really want to make sure this problem does not happen again, get conformal coating and coat the esc's board with it. Make sure to remove any coating from the tops of the transistors - the part that meets with the heatsink. Razor blade works good for that. If you do this, your speed controller will be dunkable and still work.

              Ed, you are correct, the point is this boat could be an out of control missile

                I have personnaly been lucky with the 80A Mystery, I got 3 on bids, each time the price was lower than the previous, that's why I got 3, I said to myself, for that money I can buy one every week as spare, so I have 2 spare one, but I never manage to kill the first one, it's been correctly flooded once before I watercool and waterproof it with silicon sealant, I pulled up to 97A, no way it doesn't want to die!
                The most difficult with Mytery's is to find the prog. procedure!

                  Programing

                  Hi ED66677;
                  I made a copy of the instructions you pointed me to.
                  When trying to program the ESC it doesn't seem to remember, and now it is stuck in program mode.
                  I was running in 4s, until the other day when I converted an old boat to brushless and tried to run it on 2s, it ran just fine for about 2 minutes then died.
                  I have been trying to program it hooked up to 4s (where it wasn't working) perhaps I would be better off trying to program this thing hooked up to 6s where it is working.
                  I got a gps yesterday and I am dying to make a run and see what she is doing.
                  I am hesitant to do that in 6s, could be interesting. I wish I had a camera man/woman.

                    do you have a pistol style radio?
                    if yes I suggest you swap the ESC from throttle chanel to steering servo chanel, you will have then more chance that the thing respond correctly! doesn't cost anything to give it a try!... abd if by chance you get get it to play a different sound when steering (left or right) than when at "center wheel", this means it is responding to "entering prog mode" when steering!

                      Esc Trouble

                      Good News !!!
                      I am back in business.
                      After trying to re-program the ESC, with it connected to 4s, it dawned on me that if it will run on 6s then perhaps I should connect it to 6s while trying to re-program the thing.
                      Success ! I have my Mystery running on 4s again, at least on the bench. It was dark by the time I accomplished this.
                      I got a gps for my birthday, no more conjecture, I will have real data on how fast the Viking Build is going on what prop, with what batteries etc.
                      I will be at the lake tomorrow. Think good thoughts.

                        GREAT!
                        does the Swang's prog. procedure correspond 100% to the 200A Mystery?

                          Swang Mystery

                          Hi ED;
                          I am convinced that I didn't get the ESC wet at this point. For some reason running it on 2s caused a program fault.
                          I didn't go all the way through the programing sequence, but I got half way through and it seemed to be correct. With the exception of the, push the stick all the way down when you are done and the ESC will arm and allow you to start the motor.
                          I had to unplug the battery and plug it back in for it to arm.
                          Thanks
