Turn fin on rigger for straight line speed?

So if your setting up a rigger (etti demon) for straight line speed do you run a turn fin or two or none?

If you let it slow and settle at the end of straight you could get away without. It should steer then. Use the sponson adjustments to get it running straight.

SAW hydro racers almost never run a turn fin, and the few who do use a small one. FE boats almost always stop at the end of each run and wait for their wake to settle before making another pass. I lost a record holding boat by not waiting long enough and crossing what was left of my own wake. The above is for record speeds of course.

Definatley no turn fin for a speed run its just drag. That's how we clocked our nitro hydros when drag racing for fun back in the day.

Good deal. Just making sure before I begin. I may put a removable one or buy an extra set of sponsons. Or I have two of these riggers anyway. One for drag, one for turning. Thanks for the input fellas. And yes when I make a speed run I let it slow before turning.

back in 1992 I set speed records in x and f hydro . I used a turn fin that was on a pivot and connected to rudder. with the rudder straight ahead, the turn fin was out of the water, when turned, it would pivot down and enable the boat to turn. knowing what i know now, whether or not i was running electric or nitro, i would run a small fin and go into the turn as fast as i could, minimizing the amount of time required to reach top speed. just my opinion.

A big problem I'm having is it will hook one way at random. My theory is when it's running the turn fin is in and out the water. Either the turn fin isn't long enough. Is too long or the curve in it is throwing it off.

Most SAW riggers do not run fins unless you need to make an arc while in the coast down to avoid a island, rock, etc. If you have sharp edges this will help dig enough when slowed down to turn. I have seen some racers servo tape a razor blade on the right sponson just to give enough hook up to track straight and turn.

If the rigger wants to hook and dive in different directions, this is a separate issue.

Well it's not diving, it will turn one way sometimes when I let off or get on it. My cheetah is about 2" behind the turn fin. Turns awesome, just does not like going straight. This isn't the demon I'm talking about, it's a tfl arrow that I bought to learn how to tune and adjust these things before I build my demon. I'll take what I learn from this and apply it to the new one.

Just watch my last video. It hooks off to the right side at random. Maybe the sponsons aren't lined up perfectly. I'll check that this evening.
