only thing I can think of atm, is being able to reuse your current motor mounts. the 380's iirc use an 18mm hole spacing as opposed to your current 25mm spacing. hth

I am no expert but I adapted a KB45L to work with the 4mm shaft in my boat. Diego and Dirty said the coupler looked like it was a 3/8 socket off of the motor but that is all I had to work with (it worked by the way). The coupler was meant for a .150" flex shaft and I expanded it to fit a 4mm shaft. The difference is about 50 microns.

I can fabricate up a new motor mount plate in 15 mins if that is needed.
Tell me more about the 380L, long can motors.
We now have a big question here, based on 6 Nimh cell power
380 8L 26000 rpm
380 6L 34500 rpm
540 10S 25500 rpm
540 8S 31200 rpm
These are all Feigao motors that Steve sells right here.
Give me a motor that will replace and exceed my 23t brushed cans.
oh, I need an ESC too.
Will the X-power 100 A that Steve sells do the job, or can I go for a little lower in Amps as I have a good deal on a 80A (constant) BL Esc
Thank you all for bearing with me as I make the move from Br to BL.

Now I know is it smaller than a Fiego 540 S but to me power is power.
Perhaps to you it is - but not as far as FE boats are concerned. The 540 motors have more torque and will spin a larger prop more easily than the 380s given similar Kvs. If you are replacing a 540 brushed motor, the 540S is the logical choice. IMO you will not be happy with the 380s.
BL motors are great, but like brushed motors you have to make the correct choices or you will have issues. For your 6 NiMH cells the 8S will work great, and when you upgrade to LiPo it will not be "too much" motor as long as you are sane with prop choices. In the real world with good cells you will see closer to 27,000 rpm on the water with the 8S, a good place to be.

As you have noticed I do like to cast my net wide and far. This way I get a lot of opinions from which to base a decision on.
It is now very clear that I need a 540 8S or equivalent. That being a 540 size motor of 4400 kv or close.
This will be driven via an ESC of 80A or more.
Thank you all for your input and advice.

To save you all from a new topic I thought I should drag this one back up.
I have gone Brushless
I bought a cheap motor locally that is a 36-36-4000
I also got a 60A speedy.
My first impression is that this motor is nearly as good as a 23t brushed for speed.
The speedy was only warm after a a few good laps of the pond.
I have been able to send my boat much much further than it has ever been before using brushed motors.
I now know that all of my control issues were down to Br motors and the esc with or without bec.
That is all now in the past as I have taken the jump to BL and will stay.
I will keep the br motors for my land vehicles for now as I slowly upgrade the fleeet of boats to BL.
I have now verified that a very short 540 is not really powerfull enough.
There are many of you who may feel inclined to say I told you so and please do. I have an alarming habit of learning from my own endevours as well as others.
I now need to get a 540S ( like Jay said ) and see how things will pan out from there.
For now I am VERY happy as I have complete control over my boats over most of the pond, if I go too far I can not see them.
BL is here for me !!
Lipo is next !!

I got my pair of 8S motors a few days ago and ran them this morning.
I have the x-power 100A speedy from here and without the water cooling plumbed in it was quite warm but not hot.
The motors with a coil on them were just warm after 1 min at wot on a 531 octura.
First out was my hydro with my older test cells.
Out of the hole was great
1/2 throttle was as fast as it had ever been on a brushed can
Wot was heart stopping
There was a lot of leaves on the pond so the rudder and fin kept fouling, but I got a few good laps in.
Next out was the cat with a 431 on the shaft.
That was fun
Pit stop for a 531, into the water, idle out past the ducks, pull the trigger hard.
On launch it used to lift the nose with the SS can and I thought that was cool.
Now it come completely out of the water like a Top Fuel drag boat.
At wot it is just insane with the 531.
I now see the difference between the smaller no-name BL can that I have and these motors that are available from Steven.
In the next few days I will get the rigger, tunnel and canard out on the new BL motors and see how it goes.
I am now a very very happy boater.
