    Hughey Gear Drive questions...

I'm trying to setup a geardrive for an experiment I want to try, but I have a question that maybe someone out there (Jay, ???) has an answer to perhaps??

The first geardrive in question at this point is a Hughey Single.

    1) The main driveshaft appears to be 3/16" (.183 actually...) and the supplied coupler is .185 or so... Has this always been the case, or are their versions with a 5mm shaft?? Otherwise, what do people do about getting couplers that will fit the shaft?? I'm going to need one for a 1/16" wiredrive setup, but all those I have are for either 1/8" shafts or 5mm shafts...

The next geardrive in question is the Fine Design Single:

    1) The driveshaft on this appears to be the same size as the axles for an Associated pan car, which I have a feeling was the idea... since the gearhubs also fit my pan cars..... WHAT do you do about a coupler for this setup?? Is it 6mm?? It's smaller than the 8mm couplers I have. What do you use for couplers on these geardrives???

Any info would be appreciated... THANKS!

    Darin,

Check with Ned Schmidt, he used to make couplers for the FDM Turbo Trans. He can probably get you up and running.

The FDM turbo trans I have used in two of my boats has a .250" output shaft.
I used an Octura .250 x .150 coupler. FDM still sells the coupler I believe, I don't know the part#. I also don't know if Octura made these for a wire drive.
      Hope this helps a little.

        Hughey gear box shaft

        Hi
I have two of the Hughey gear boxes. Both are single motor types. I measured the shafts and both measure to 3/16" . I don't know if anybody makes a 3/16" coupler for it and wire drive. I can if desired. I have been making couplers for wire and flex drive since 2002. I could for the other gearbox too .The one with the 1/4" shaft.
It is tempting to go back to the gearboxes and try out some of these super high rpm BL motors.

Jeff Wohlt makes some really nice couplers. I needed one where my cable was a bit undersized , he cut it to fit perfect.
