A used GARMIN FORERUNNER 201 can be had for around $60-70 here. This is small enough for most hulls.http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerun.../dp/B0000CFYCH
The Garmin really is the best IMO.
That said, I had used for years this made by Skyrc:http://www.skyrc.com/index.php?route...&product_id=43
Note, the refresh rate with satellite is slower than the Garmin and you may not get a reading for SAW type of short sprint. This unit is now sold by TowerHobbies as well:http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXEUYN&P=ML
These non Garmin is really light weight and on mine (Skyrc) the battery is non-replaceable. USB charge and the battery has diminished through the years, but there is another port where you can use a servo wire to plug into any open port from a RX.
Too many boats, not enough time...

Do whatever you can to get a forerunner 201. They are accurate and the refresh rate is the fastest. Like said above. I've had several and love them. Losing them is why I've had several. Boat sinking. Taping it to the top of a hull and flipping. My son hitting a pole with his rc car and it being in the car. Etc. lol

        Dynamite GPS Speed Meter: http://www.amain.com/rc-cars/dynamit...yn4401/p300987

It is supposedly 10hz refresh rate (GPS gets updated 10 times per second).
Which is great if you're doing short runs, etc IMHO.

I have my doubts about that though. Because I compared it head to head with my Garmin Glo which *is* truly 10hz and it was behind by 1-2mph every time. Not only that, but in terms of refresh rate the Glo would always be way ahead of it when I'm accelerating. If you guys want I could make a video comparing the 2 side by side in my car. I think it is at most 5hz. Kind of shows by their firmware...

The only good thing about it is that its most likely better than most older garmin forerunners and stuff, but also that it is super lightweight-- only 30 grams.
Aside from possible bogus refresh rate it doesn't show mph by default, you have to change it from kilometers but it also doesn't show mph down to the 10th of a mile, ie. It shows only 80mph and not 80.5mph.
So you're stuck using kmh if you want to be more precise.

I just got one of these. Only drawback I've noticed is it only displays in Kmh.

The Skyrc unit I had was in metric unit also, but I went to their site and downloaded a software and changed to miles-per-hour.

i have a SHY RC gps and would not recommend this unit to the hobbyist. the refresh rate is way to slow.

Agreed. Can't get consistent readings from run to run.

Been using the Holux gps for a few years now. 5 Hz refresh rate which is pretty good.

this may help any others that have the Sky RC GPS.
i reloaded the firmware thinking i had nothing to lose.
at first it was same old thing with bad readings. then it was close to correct and when i went to reset i noticed it was on record mode.
did a few more runs like that with favorable results. no idea why that would make a differance

Got to cycle the button, everytime I triple check that it is set in "record" mode. Also there is the word "Peak" if i remember correctly. I have used this extensively albeit knowing that the Garmin is a far superior product.

The new Garmin Etrex 10 is almost the same size as the old 101 and 201's but is a little more updated and works faster and with much better reception. The new units lock on 6-12 satellites and several ground based towers in a lot less time. The wrist strap of the 101 and 201 was handy. The Garmin Forerunner 310XT is a great logger and GPS that is wrist band style and even faster time to lock on satellites. The new ones will lock on even indoors through a concrete tile roof. The logging feature of the 310 works well and plays back the entire run so you can see your speed every inch of the way.

That is great to know, I have an e Trex Venture HC, man, is that big and heavy. I love my Forerunner 201 though.
