That makes sense. I run liners when I have a floppy shaft so I keep mine nice and clean, but if you have a greasy shaft give it a wash before you stick it in, it's the gentlemanly thing to do.

You always want to clean the end well. I usually use a paper towel wetted with lacquer thinner. The collet should be taken apart and brake cleaned every now and then to get what grease still gets in it out. It surely grips a lot better when it is clean and dry versus greased up.

Have to use a torque wrench sometime on a collet with a scrap piece of flex in the vise and see how much the difference is. ????

A touch of never seize as mentioned already or grease on the threads is smart so it can tighten smoothly with less chance of galling. Good firm tightening without over tightening is key to a solid connection. Take out the crush and when you feel it get solid it is time to stop.

        Cliff notes

Make sure tip of shaft is clean when it comes out and before it goes in.

I use rubbing alcohol and paper towel on mine, use the thumb and index finger close as much as I can on Collet.never slips.
