4s wild thing goes up in smoke why ?

Hi all built a 32'' Finch Wild Thing mono from 1/8'' 3 layer birch plywood .Hull +hardware +radio gear weights 60 oz flex shaft is 3/16'' dia motor is a TP 2200 KV 40X92 ESC is a Swordfish 200 + amp unit esc is programed at o degree timing advance and a LVC at 3.2v /cell esc is wired with 12 ga wire and Castle 5.5 mm bullet connectors for paralell wiring harness. Lipo's powering the boat are 2 -Team GREAT HOBBIES 14.8v 5000 mah 50c batteries wired in paralell . Prop x637 /2 .Last season i was getting speeds around 46 mph. Both of the lipo's where a little swollen from last season. Mono ran for about 30 seconds then shut down upon retrieval the 1 lipo was swollen to 4 times its normal size and pushed the hatch open looking at the esc the negative battery lead was melted off the esc along with 2 of the motor leads the gps registered a top speed of a whopping 18 mph i also noticed the TP motor was also very hot and fairly hard to turn by hand. Could there also be damage to the motor, How would i determine if damge is done to the motor? Im lost to how all this could happen i would understand if the lipos would of just gave out. Regards Andris Golts.

I'm not sure on what broke what first but, severely swollen lipos arent a good first sign. I can check the motor for you sometime.

FYI if the motor is toast, there is a nice 1521 1.5D in the swap shop at a nice price. Me, I'd never trust a lipo from Great Hobbies in a boat, car yes.

You need to open the motor up and see if the core has been buggered up by the unraveling of the carbon fiber wrap. Inside you need to inspect the front and rear of the coils to see if the coating has gone black, burnt. It is possible that the motor is ok, esc I could try to revive for you too. batteries are garbage now most likely.

I get most of my batts from Hobby King, some from Dinogy in the past and my favorites, Revolectrix.

I wonder if maybe the motor bearings dried up over its shelf term. Pull it apart and check.

I am on this as I just had an outrunner do this(locked right up). My ESC checks out fine

I have a Great hobbies 14.8 50c battery that I bought last year ran it about six time at the end of last summer battery seamed great balanced good. Took it out of storage and notice its starting to puff. After a couple of runs this year and it seems to have puffed a little more. Funny thing balances good and still has good power. Here is my last run max amp 142 and min. voltage 13.8. I'm running a TP 4050 2220kv and swordfish 200.

The reason I don't like Great hobbies batteries is because they only give you one C rating I.E. 50C. So is it minimum 50C or max. 50C ????? For all we know they could be 25C-50C or 50C-100C but, they don't say. Not saying they are bad, just confusing and with batteries, I like clarity.

C ratings are a joke...they are all over rated...

              Found the problem

Rule number one when working with 99% of brushless motors: never cut the wires or shorten them past factory tinning.

I am extremely surprised your boat ran at all, ever if they were shortened from first install into your Wild Thing.

The rotor looks fine but, turns like it has been over heated. The windings look fine but, after removal of your connectors I can see many strands not connected to solder so there could be burnt windings inside anywhere that the eyes cannot get to.

I'm sorry but, the motor is toast. The connectors were also all filled with solder and had no spring left in them. When I tried to connect the male motor wires to female esc wires and they would not stay in so I spread them out so they would. I used a $30 Suppo esc to test the motor and it may have baked itself, no biggee. Esc might still be o.k. but, I should have checked the connectors and wires before trying to test it. Oh well...
The motor just stuttered like it had cold solder joints as it did.
