    Break away bolt

Couple of weeks ago I must have hit a stick or something. The brass bolt that comes stock on speed master rudder sheared off.
Looking for replacement. I've seen nylon used... Where can I find something locally? Home Depots assume?
Not interested in buying online and paying sgipping for a 30 cent piece.
    Lmk thanks

    Shear Bolt

Ace hardware for brass shear bolts, nylon bolts may or may not be carried by them . For a online 30cent piece, that's when you buy a hand full .

Every time I use nylon, it breaks with the slightest twig or debris. I use 4-40 brass all the time and only gives way to hard boueys and other boats :-( .

Yeah I was wondering if nylon would even hold up to the pressure against the rudder at 60 mph

I'm needing to switch to brass myself. Been lazy, finally picked some up the other day. This is what happens to my
6-32 nylon screws (I'm using bigger than the 3mm stock nylon ones that came in the rudder) after a couple passes with my Rivercat. Btw, it's not broken, just stretched.

I probably have one if you can tell me the size and we can meet and I will give it to you

I also drill out the threaded Chinese rudders otherwise the brass can get sheared off and be stuck in a threaded hole. If you drill out a 3mm hole with 1/8th drill bit it will take a 4-40 bolt perfectly.

Well, the speed master rudder uses a bolt and nut. It's not threaded at all so I just gotta grab something. John may have some or I can just toss a couple of zip ties or just drill it out to fit 6/32 which I grabbed at lowes this evening but are a bit too large.
They had 4/40 but not long enough.
I'll check ace hardware or Home Depot or whatever

I feel like 6/32 might be a bit too thick and not actually shear if I hit something.
I gotta wonder if the thinner bolt it comes with is that size for that reason

The Ace hardware near me has all kinds of screws, including a drawer of miniature stainless machine screws, all lengths.
I have some brass ones in my box though, I think they are long enough. Kintec sells 2 different lengths, pretty sure I have some of the longer ones left.
FWIW, I don't think it really needs to be brass, if you hit something at 50-60 mph, a steele bolt is going to shear before anything else lets go.

Yeah Kevin you could be rite about that, but Ide have a hard time believing a stainless bolt would break without causing some damage...
                        Let me measure the hole.
Any chance you would toda couple in an envelope and send em my way?

Ok so I just pulled a chunk of the original screw out, and it is in fact 4/40. Too bad lowes didn't have longer ones.
The hole itself is actually larger at 3 mm
