Help on motor and esc choice

Hello all. I recently acquired a BBY 40" Winston eagle war eagle (lobster boat) and I am looking for advice on the power train.

    What I was thinking was a NEU 1527 1D with 2 4s lipo packs to make a 8s.

now being fairly new to electrics I thought I would ask the experts opinion on what set up I should run and what speeds to expect, I want well over 60mph, will be used for racing.

    Thanks for the help

    Welcome to OSE Charlie.

A 1527 1D is too hot for 8S unless you want to go 100mph once. It can be used using 4 cells with two parallel packs to make 4S2P. You will need a strong 240+ amp controller to make that motor run properly. If you wanted to run 8S, you should look at a 1527 1Y.

You can always call Randy at BBY who makes the hull for suggestions.

so a 1Y instead of a 1D ? what is the difference and will there be a huge speed difference? I would like to hit 80+ not sure if that is possible reliably.
      thanks for the input

Well first are you planning on running 8S1P or 4S2P? Are you planning on racing? This will make a difference in which direction you go. 80 mph is obtainable with either choice, but easier on the controller if you go with 8S1P, a 1527 1Y and a reasonable controller.

was going to run 2 4s in series. and yes it will be raced. (oval right hand turns, not SAW) I may switch to a single 8s battery, all depends on room and such

why would there be a difference between 1 - 8s pack or 2 - 4s packs run in series?

any recommendation on the controller? brand , size etc..

S sport Hydro is rarely raced not even at the National level, so I assume you plan on running in open?

There is no difference between 2 4S in series and a single 8S brick besides the extra connection. There are fewer chargers that can directly charge a single 8S brick unless it is split up.

Look at the SF300 Pro or Castle 240 ICE if you can find one.

that's good to know on the lack of difference. My chargers only do up to 7s. I may even drop down to a 6s so I can fall in the Q class, but yeah mainly open class. so a 1527 1Y with a SF300 pro controller and 2 4s packs in series. with this setup and the right prop any guess on speed? or would you rec a diff motor ?

For 6S your best match would be a 1527 1.5D which has a kv near 1500. That would be a very solid set-up and with a X450/3 or 1455 you are looking at speeds in the 70's assuming the hull can be set-up.

I am a little hard to get a hold of now a days. I work a part time job Tuesday threw Friday/ after noon for 5 Hr. a day. I am running the 1527 1D on 4S2P with great results. I have the 1527 1.5D for my next run at S Sport hydro (SAW) if I ever have any free time again.

                      Hello Randy :)
I am watching the mail closely, waiting for the boat you shipped me to show. I cant wait to get it painted and in the water. Sounds like the 1527 1D with a good ESC is the way to go and I can play with battery and prop configuration to get what I need for speed out of it

This sale went wrong. Charley wanted to return the boat. I wanted to think about it and come up with a plan. This morning before I had a chance to do anything he filed a dispute claim with PayPal against my account. He has not returned the boat either. As far as I am concerned.... If he does not return my product and takes my money first he is a thief. You guys be careful of him, he is a loose cannon.
