    Italian Wood kits

    Howdy boaters,
found these the other day http://seaclearboat.weebly.com/
Anyone built one of the kits?
I like the look of the Mystic 5000 but it's still in production

I started in fast electric with scratch built wood boats, then bought a fiberglass hull from OSE and built that. When I first ran the fiberglass and wood boats together in an informal fun race, the boats made contact. The wood boat was crushed and the fiberglass boat unscratched. Pretty much the end of wood boat projects for me. The wood boats are lighter, potentially faster, and aesthetically more pleasing, but for me, not too practical. Maybe my wood boats just weren't constructed well enough, maybe the kits are much stronger, but in a wood vs fiberglass contact, fiberglass will usually win. I may build a wood/aircraft plastic sheeting boat for speed runs, but I will not be racing other boats with it.

I'll have to disagree with you Knot - and not just because of the WI - MN thing. I've built a pile of boats with a good portion being wood. Knowing they would be swapping paint with others out there, I built them with plenty of foam. I've bumped others plenty of times, been run over, and have speared other boats several times with them. Fiberglass can sometimes crack in areas away from the main impact. Damage on my boats has been mainly at the impact area due to the foam dispersing the energy. For me, wood is also much easier to repair than glass.

Nice find Heath. Some good sizes too.
You know that I love building wooden boats. You might have cost me some money here. Oh! No!

Foam reinforcement is a great idea, kinda makes them a styrofoam/wood hybrid. I will have to try that in my next wood build. Just kinda afraid of the foam expanding and breaking seams as it drys/hardens, assuming you are using something like Great Stuff foam.

Pink or blue foam - expanding foam seems to cause some problems. Takes a little bit of time to fit pieces of foam into the frame, but it sure helps. I've also been able to use thinner ply on the exterior on some scratch builds because the foam provides so much support.

A well built wood boat is forever.

How cool is that 43" Apache? Love the lines on those. You could build an honest to goodness offshore looking boat from that.

A carbon fiber boat came off second best when I hit it with my wood & foam 40" Sports Hydro. Demolished the driveline, transom & motor mounts.

The monos don't seem to have strakes, how do you think they would handle?

You could add the strakes. I had to add then to my wild thing builds too.

I think they came up with a kit version of the one I scratch built in this build thread

                              http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...t=30in+max+cat

there are free boat plans similar to some of these kits free for download
