Rudder length

    Rudder length

    Just curious, is there a general guide line for how long a rudder should be in relation to the bottom of the keel. Boat i have is a 40"deep vee. Running strictly for sport. Thanks for any and all imput.

    if the rudder is on the right side i lean the boat onto the left side on a table and I usually want between an inch and 2 inches in the water when the boat is leaning left that way on left turns the rudder is still in the water, the bigger the boat the more rudder i want in the water, a 40" I would have a n inch and a half, smaller boats less bigger boats more, this is just my way of doing it.

      Yep....and I think the answer Mike is conveying here is........'as short as possible'. Costly, but some folks trim and trim the length until the boat eventually doesn't turn. Then, they buy a new rudder and shorten to the optimum length just longer than their last iteration.
