    motor and esc suggestion

I am looking to put a brushless motor and esc in my apache 24. I built some 8 cell nicad packs that made a 19 turn brushed motor scream but also cooked the motor. It looks like brushless motors can handle a lot more voltage, but what if you are using a little less voltage (9.6), will they still run well? I was looking at the ammo 36-40-2900 in runner because I found it for about $20. Will it work? Thanks for any info. Oh, I am good about pics and video so if you help me out with the set up I will definately post pics of it and a vid of it running to show how well it worked.

It is the same diameter but shorter in length by 10mm than a Feigao 540S motor. Might have a heat issue with it in a 24 inch hull. Do you have the spec data on the motor for fecalc?

    Example:

    ***Motors / Kv/ ......io/ Rm/ ......Mag/ Turns/ Cells/ Weight
    Feigao12S/ 2958/ 2.1/ .0136/ B-Less/ 12/ .......8/ ....300g

I wish all motor manufacturers would give a max watts rating.

Have you found a water cooling jacket that will fit?

These are the specs I see. I was thinking of running this with the sv27 esc.

      SPECS: Motor Diameter: 1.42" (36mm)
      Motor Length: 1.57" (40mm)
      Shaft Diameter: .197" (5mm)
      Shaft Length: .591" (15mm)
      kV Rating: 2900 rpm/V
      Weight: 6.5oz (185g)
      Input Voltage: 14.8-18.5V
      Max. Constant Current: 45A
      Max. Surge Current: 90A
      Max. Constant Watts: 833W
      No Load Current: 2.7A

Why would the motor overheat? Is it because of the shorter length. This thing is $23. The 50mm is $60. It just seems like the 50 mm might be almost too much for this boat, it's a pretty light plastic boat. Couldn't I just run this with two 6 cell nicad packs and a smaller prop?? I was hoping that a cooling sleeve that covered 70 percent of the surface of a "normal" 50mm long motor would still fit and almost completely cover the can in nice cool water. Am I crazy?? I have a $20 off coupon so $23 for the motor and $60 for the sv esc would put my conversion at $63 (+ a little bit at the lhs for cooling and a prop, but the wife doesn't have to know about that)

I plugged a simular motor, a Feigao 12s - 2958kv into FeCalc. It suggests to start testing with a X430 prop when using 9.6 volts at 300 watts and 40 amps. The 12s could possibly go up to a X432 without using more than 45 amps. Hope this helps?

Thanks, that is helpfull, I was thinking of going with the x432 and that confirms it. One question, with the stats on this motor it says it should be run at: Input Voltage: 14.8-18.5V Does that low number really matter? Would running it at 9.6 volts be a problem? I can't figure out why it would but this whole amperage/voltage thing gets a little confusing.
