aftermarket collet motor coupler that fits proboat impulse 31 v2?

    Hi all!

I really dislike the stock grub screw coupler that came with the pro boat impulse 31 v2. I ordered the OE upgrade: octura collet coupler but noticed that its too long (runs into the section where the flex shaft comes out of) the second thing is section on the coupler that attaches to the engine side is too large (when it rotates it close to the bottom of the motor mount)

Do I need to purchase a new motor mount for the coupler to work? I'll take a bunch of pictures of it tomorrow. I also just received the MBP collet coupler and found it to be just as long as the octura and it's even larger on the side that connects to the motor.

If anyone has any ideas or product recommendations, I would truly appreciate it

Which version of the collet did you order?http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...ct-ocfhe5mm15S

If I am correct, both of the these Octura collets ( 5mm - .150" long and short version) have a clearance issue with PB's motor mount, at least on my MG V1 but I think they may be the same. I was able to circumvent this problem by grinding away some aluminum on the motor mount under that part you described. It is the set screw that touches the mount. Now I don't know how low the motor rests on this mount in the IM31 V2.
As for that other part that is being too long, you might see how far the mount can go forward to gain whatever little space you need. It is not an ideal situation, I prefer to have the mount sit on the wooden platform, by sliding it forward you lose some support.
I have not tried the TFL Stainless Steel collet, may be someone can chime in.
Third item:http://www.kintecracing.com/Collets_Couplers.html However, it is just as long.

biggest problem is the flat spot on the flex ; collets don't like that

Yup I have a mystic29 did the same with the octura short to use long one ground down stuffing tube but still tight fit so I have made all of above work.

I didn't realize they made the shorter version of the octara coupler? I clicked on RTR upgrades on the ofse website and purchased the 5mm to .150 upgrade. I received the coupler with two grub screws on the motor side. As for moving the motor mount forward, I'm unable to do that unless I drill my own holes into the wood but I'm thinking that might not be as secure without the metal threading that the bolts go into.

The shaft that I'm using is the upgraded .150 cable on the site that appears to have solder on the end. I noticed that the grub screw indented a mark on it(looks okay but I'm sure if I looked it may not be 100% round) I hope I dont need a new cable for the coupler to work. Maybe if I resoldered the flex shaft end it may help

So my options are to grind the existing motor mount down to gain more clearance and to modify the mounting spot by placing it forward?

I don't mind grinding the mount but moving it forward to gain extra length seems like a lot of work for a supposedly plug and play upgrade on the RTR upgrade section.

Well, first of all, if you indeed have the long version, try the short version with only a single grub screw, it should be ok, it is almost the same length as the old PB collet they used on my MG.
Secondly, DO NOT drill holes on the wooden platform, as you noted, there are metal blind nuts underneath the wood. The holes on the motor mount is elongated, allows some adjustments, I was referring to that kind of movements.
As said, a flat spot is not good for the collet, do check it, but I personally have no such experience with the solder end having a flat spot and having to resolder it, sorry, can't advice.

Or if you have enough stuffing tube length sticking out just cut it off to fit.

Ya Ray makes sense, forgot that the mystic 29
Has slotted motor mount in top as well as bottom were the mg does not. Tried to find one of them for my mg build but replacement one is the mg mount. For mystic 29 as well as the mg.

I just grind down the motor shaft down so the flat spot was from front to back with a Dremel tool , this way there is a lot of adjustment . worked for me on my v1 .

That's a genius idea! I think I'll start off by dremelling the bottom center of the motor mount, I'm thinking that will do it. Rather keep the motor shaft untouched. I'm surprised how much those grub screws stick out of the coupler when tightened...wouldn't that cause vibration and balance issues at high rpm? Or am I just overthinking it?
