I need a modern soldering station. After some poking around I see they now come with hot air irons. Is anyone using this setup and how is it working out?
Thanks.
Yes, but only for repairing surface mount components on boards like FET's, . They don't work for soldering heavy gauge wire.
Look at a good 80W or better 200W chisel tip soldering iron with variable heat control.

I have this unit and I've had it going on 3 years nowand it's been a good unit. I've replaced the soldering iron twice, just plain wore it out. That will give you an idea how much I've used it, needless to say if it ever takes a dump I'll buy another one. Also the control settings seem to be accurate and I do 8ga. and 10ga. 8mm bullet connectors with it, you just can't rush it. This one is 60w you have to look at the specs cause some of these look identical and are only like 30w I think the 852D is like that, this one is the 952D http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-In-1-SMD-H...item2577af7e83
Thanks guys. Just picked up one like you linked above and it came in at under 100 bucks shipped. I'm happy with that price. Pretty much ready to go now.

I'm sure you'll be happy with it. The hot air gun is the shizit for heat shrink, you'll never burn your heat shrink again!!
Tyler is right. Most soldering stations are inadequate for soldering 8-10gauge wire and connectors. I have a Yihua 853D, which is great for soldering small gauge wire and circuit board stuff for low amp components on Quads and other flying models. Outstanding for surface mount components and repair work and the heat gun is very controllable for shrink tube. Be careful when e-bay buying from China.... some items are knock-offs of the real deal. I fall back to the reliable Weller 80 watt iron for soldering boat size power wires and connectors.
Its an 80w setup should be fine. I don't run anything over 4s so 10 gauge wire is not really a concern. If I do need more head I'll break out my 20 year old gun. I can almost stick weld with that thing. Thanks for the heads up.
