Hello everyone Im new to electric boating and live in a part of Australia where most people have rarely seen an rc boat let alone a fast one hence the reason for me joining this great forum to gain more knowledge from more experienced boaters. I have built a 4s pursuit now would like to build up a fast hk genesis 1050 hull my lovely wife purchased for my birthday.(I know the hull probably wont last long but Just a few questions and keep in mind this will be a saw boat. Could I run a leopard 4082 1600kv or tp4050 1570kv with 240amp swordy on 8S? If so what prop should I run?. Also a 3 blade or 2 blade? what are the advantages and disadvantages? would it be turn into a plane? I know 6s would be enough but this is just another learning platform for a large scale mono I want to build once I have more experience. Any help would be much appreciated. cheers Shane.

Yeah mate, looked at the combos. very good value for money. Do you know if they sell "b" motors with the wires going out the back or are they out the side?Last edited by Aussie Shane; 01-08-2015, 05:28 PM.Comment

I just recently put together a Hobbyking Genesis just a little over a month ago, and I absolutely love it! Its a tough boat with a proven hull design that's excellent for SAW runs.
I went with a single drive setup that HobbyKing sells for $210. It comes with the hardware, motor, mounts, battery trays, etc. Its only about $50 more than the bare hull, so it's a bargain.
I've been able to get the boat to 65 mph (105 kilometers) reliably on 6S, so far about 35 full throttle runs exclusively in salt water and its been bulletproof. Running 8S, you would probably need a lower kv motor than the 1600 Leopard you mentioned.
Below is my setup and some tips on my build....
- Drop the stock 4mm driveline. Its a pain to grease the 2 piece shaft, and it won't be able to handle the power if you go beyond 4S and the stock motor.
- I went with a 3/16 (.187) driveline. Using a OSE 3/16th Strut, Kintec Racing Genesis 1 Piece flexshaft, 5mm to .187 collet. Without the Teflon liner, the stuffing tube is the perfect recommended size for the .187 flexshaft.
- Lube the flexshaft well. You will need a plastic syringe to inject your flexshaft grease into the strut. This will prevent water from entering though the stuffing tube. I can do 7 runs in a row, and not get any water at all coming in from the stuffing tube when it's greased correctly.
- I bought two motors for the boat, both Leopard 4082. One is a 2200kv motor, which I use on 4S. The other is 1600kv on 6S. I no longer run the 2200kv motor, the boat runs cooler and "less stressed" on the 1600kv motor on 6S.
- I use a Seaking 180a ESC V3. I upgraded the stock cheap outboard capacitors to Castle Creations CapPac.
- My favorite prop for this setup is a Octura M445 and X642. This puts me at about 60 - 65 mph with low heat.
- Reinforce the hull if you want to go over 50mph! I got some small spider cracks on the right sponson due to a high speed flip over. I just poured about 4 ounces of Bondo Resin into each sponson, make sure to leave a thin layer all over. Then I reinforced the main hull with 2 to 3 layers of fiberglass mat. I've had numerous flips and have not gotten anymore cracks and none of the original spider cracks have grown larger.
- Careful on the hatch tape you use. The clear coat is rather delicate, and can easily pull with aggressive tape like Renfro Hockey Tape. I use cheap black electrical tape myself.
- Torque roll can be an issue with a powerful single drive. I ballast additional weight on the left sponson to make up for it if I run two equal size batteries. I also have a million 2S bricks, so I will run 3 of them to go 6S, with 2 stacked on the left sponson and one on the right. My boat runs smooth and doesn't porpoise like so many Genesis boats I've seen.
Here is a vid and a couple of pics of my Genesis. It hit 65mph on this run with a GoPro Hero standing 7 inches high on the deck ....
