transom trim tabs with water pickups

has anyone used this setup as an alternative water intake?$(KGrHqYOKocE4)eURIS1BOS2G0JNfg~~48_12.JPG

I would think with the force of the boat pushing against those tabs, the pressure would be higher than the rudder intake

How do you trim those tabs?

I can see that, but if the water is choppy, most likely the rudder is exiting the water as well

they arent adjustable. much like some of the stock trim tabs on rtr boats. this is simply, i think, another option for water pickup like some of the underhull designs. thats how i stumbled on this one.

Nicely machined thingys, but the rudder pick up is still the most efficient way, anything hanging on the transom is extra drag disrupting water cleanly breaking off the transom, even trim tabs, that's why they say a truly well tuned boat doesn't need them. I don't see these things on race boats. They are meant as a supplement or a corrective device, if you are building a boat and using the right hardware, go with rudder pick up, dual pick up if you can.

I completely agree, but im skeptical on scale models performing like their full scale brothers. especially rtr's, which is what i just bought. ive grown up with boats most of my life and a few of them were nicely made boats that had trim tabs. I think of a trim tab on an RC boat as the trim on a lower unit of an outboard engine. once you are up on plane, trim down the engine to drop the nose and haul a$$! I have seen the servo controlled stinger that essentially would do the same thing. But in my opinion, the coefficient of drag from these trim tabs would be so minimal you wouldnt notice the difference.

I agree with what you are saying, but what I was saying is that these pick up will only serve to clutter up the transom and the tabs on our toy boat is already way out of proportion compared to the ones on a real boat.
I have seen those servo controlled stingers and even trim tabs, great idea but in practice I don't think it's that simple to control them from the shore line without knowing every minute details and without sophisticated feedback.
In the end, IMO, KISS rules. ( referring to the adjustable stinger/trim tabs)

Yeah i thought about that as well. hard to manage from shore. you can feel the boat when you are actually on it.

Im trying to find a good rudder with dual pickups for my new traxxas spartan (arrives tomorrow) cant wait, like a little boy right now. ive seen so many and heard some make the death wobble, but i want a long one that will mostly stay in the water upon hull exit, reduce chine, but not give me the wobble many seem to experience. im assuming its due to slack in the rudder assembly or too much offset?

I don't have the Spartan, sorry.
Aren't there any nice upgrade hardware for this boat?
Honestly if you bought it new, I would run it bone stock and start from there. Don't think the water cooling will give you problems on a single pick up. , just do a "walk-around" check before maiden, make sure all the lines ( tube) are connected and no leaks from the motor jacket "o'' rings etc.
Not sure what you mean by "wobble" , you are not talking about chine walk?
Chine walk is sometimes induced by incorrect depth of the stinger.
A weak servo will cause left-right instability. But any rudder that has free play between the bracket and the blade need to be checked and any loose fasteners have to be tightened, I have a TFL rudder that came with a bad bushing and it wobbles, but have not affected much of the boat's handling. just saying.....
Don't think off setting the rudder will cause any wobble. Someone will chime in hopefully.

Those seem that if the boat left the water they would stop working.
SpeedMaster came out with a mini rudder set up with a dual pick-up.
I would start carrying if I got a strong interest.

Did anyone notice he said Speedmaster has a new dual intake mini rudder? I'd like to see that, not found on their web site.

Sorry, i did notice and forgot to ask, yes, would love to see a picture of it, been looking for a reasonably sized dual pick up rudder.

Yes they have some good parts for the spartan but seeing as this is my first rc boat, and i am completely new to the hobby, i want to make the right purchase. ive seen ruddrs that are 100-160mm, not sure which one in that lineup is giving them the death wobble or really bad chime
