advantages and disadvantages of running ubec sbec

    Hi guys

Most of the time the esc's that I run have a bec circuit for rx power. From time to time I also run opto esc's (no bec). when i do, I fall back to my usual 6v rx pack with an on/off swotch, just like any of my nitro land vehicles .

I was wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are of running a sbec / ubec for rx power , over the standard nitro vehicle or boat method

I know this enables you to use a lipo pack for rx power instead of the nimh rx pack, but one of the things I was wondering about is whether or not they have a built in lvc to prevent over discharge or does that somehow loop through an internal / external lvc

    Thanks

The biggest advantage is a receiver pack takes the heat of the voltage conversion out of the ESC and the receiver see's more stable voltage.
LV is detected by the ESC from the main pack.

On all the ESC that I have that don't have built in BECs, I use 2s LiFe packs like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-6v-1100mah...item566a7749cb I got mine from Kintec, these weigh almost nothing and take up little space. You can use them in your Tx too!

I use a Hyperion LiFe pack in my boat and love it. As flraptor07 mentioned they are very small and light. They are great value for the money. You can pick up one of the Hyperion packs here on OSE.

So, if you have an onternal / external lvc and its set properly, does it monitor cell voltage in the primary packs as well as a life / lipo rx pack thru a ubec / sbec ??...

I know i can get a 3s pack for my m11 radio, but i currently have this 6v nimh tx pack for it. At a full charge its 12+ volts but a bit heavy. I sought about picking up a 3s pack for it but I was concerned with over discharging it, which leads me to another question...

can you over discharge a life tak like you can a lipo or can you charge and discharge them like a nimh since po4 is a stable formula where lipo isn't ??.

Most TXs and RXs will not work below a certain voltage so that's not an issue.

Thanks Raptor, i didnt think of that. come to think about it on my M 11 radio when the voltage drops to a certain point the low voltage alarm goes off and within a minute the whole thing just shuts down, and I think that might even be programmable as well I'll look into it....
