Who wants to build a endurance boat?

I was trying to talk Steve V. Into hosting a 1 hour enduro race. Changing battery packs and all. Could be interesting.

It would be interesting to see solutions for keeping the flex shafts greased. Also, whoever mans the rescue boat will be kept busy keeping a field upright for a hour. I think it'd be fun to see pit stops with swapping batteries, greasing shafts, etc.

That would be an interesting concept....What setup would win?....fast...conservative...very conservative setups in the same hull, length and open class. Endurance racing is unique in its formats.

You might consider it like a Nitro or gas marathon race where a team of two boats, two drivers and two pitmen race. The boats run X number of laps and then come in and swap. It's dangerous enough with gas and nitro, I don't know how good an idea is with guys trying to rush connecting FE boats is.

The Nitro guys from NLMBC in Ontario had asked me and others if we would be able to run a class with them for a 10 minute race, pitting for batt changes etc...

I wanted too but, was not sure if I could do it. The shaft lube issue can be addressed by using an oiler with an outboard fill point. You could build a boat so that it has an open cockpit and use an auto-bailer maybe??

If you can captivate the connectors the batts plug into you would only need on hand to do batt changes.

I think it deffinetly could be done but some thought would have to be put into the safety aspect of it. The two boat team deal sounds more feasible to me that way you wouldn't have to rush a battery change. You'd just come in for a pitstop and swap boats with something like one boat couldn't launch till the other boat is out of the water and you'd need officials to watch the transfers.

Naviga do something along those lines with team Mono1 and team Eco races which are 18 minutes long and for a maximum team of 3 racers/boats (only 1 in the water at a time), but is often won by 2 boat teams with the fastest boat running the first and last stint and changing batteries while the second guy is running.

I just finished designing and building this setup. The key is making a reducer for one of the fittings to limit the flow of oil to a drop per 10 seconds or so. I ended up with a .011" hole (smallest drill I had). I also designed and made the shaft log seal. It is kind of like the aeromarine setup, but way smaller, uses a circlip to keep the o ring in instead of the setscrew clamp ring, and has the oil hole feature.

Was thinking about making more to sell them, but don't think I could make them at a competitive price for how much time they take.Oiler.jpg
