    Club points and Championships

    Hi Guys
    Just wondering how you run club points and championship systems. The reason I ask is that I have run our club system as well as been club captain for the last two years. I have mostly been the only fe running against gassers. Due to turning up to every club day and racing as best as I can I won the mono (with my Pursuit) and took out the overall. Now there are those who don't seem to like that and want to change the system. I'm almost being accused of making up a system that suits myself!! In fact I was given the task of setting this up so I took on a system used by another club, that's what I was suggested to do after all. It goes like this;

    1st- 400 pts
    2nd- 300 pts
    3rd- 225 pts
    4th 169 pts
    5th- 127 pts
    6th- 96 pts
    dnf- 25 pts
    dns- 0 pts

    We run mono, tunnel, hydro, T1 thunderboat, open electric.(new) 4 x 5 lap heat races.
    Also a 10 lap King of the Lake
    20 min enduro 1 point per lap
    85 points for turning out boat or not.

    Each persons best performing boat for the day gets those points plus KOTL plus enduro plus 85. These are the points that go towards the overall champ, as well as the individual classes having their own trophy and winner.

    Suffice to say I'm a bit gutted due to some having a dose of sour grapes and tall poppy syndrome. Sucks a bit as I've put a fair bit of effort in, being the person who has to organise and run the club day racing. The proposed new system will benefit those who spend the most and I won't even get a shot at it, especially if I want to work on building up the fe side of things as I do not the seemingly unlimited budget of some. I guess there is nothing new in all of this, but.... What do you guys do?

    Although we are an all electric club. That's the same scoring table that we use. Which is our AMPBA regs.
    Although we do have a 50 point penalty for any buoy touches or cuts. That includes the mill lap & the wind down lap.
    And of course, a penalty lap for jumping the start.
    We don't have the enduro event.
    I don't understand the 85 point reference. Are you saying that people get 85 points just for turning up, even if they don't put a boat in the water?
    If people are bitching about all your hard work, ask them to do it all for a while. Or at least form a small committee to share the load a bit.

      Yeah we have the 50 point penalty, forgot that. Yes 85 points for turning up boat or not.
      Yep pretty much, someone else can do the job!
      We have the enduro bec. of the petrols, no hydros in that.

        The proposed new points system goes something like;
        6 boats in a heat
        1st=6 pts
        2nd=5 pts
        3rd=4 pts, and so on.
        dnf=0

        What about penalties? Maybe it is a one lap penalty which puts you at the back?

        2 boat heat
        1st = 2pts
        2nd= 1pt

        Suits those classes with more boats.

        My choice then, run electric class, 2-3 boats. Support the growth of the class (my hope and passion).
        Run in mono 4-6 boats per heat. Go for points.

        Oh well...

          I race with Electra in south east England, we run 3 heats per class per event and the best 2 scores from those 3 heats decide the placings for the day, we get 9points for 1st place, 6points for 2nd, 4points for 3rd, 3for 4th, 2 for 5th, 1point for 6th. We add up everyone's best 5 results from the 7-8 races in that championship year to get the winner, in the event of a points tie the one with the most first places takes the trophy.

          A minimum of 3 boats are needed to be a championship race, if only 2 turn up we still race, but the points don't go towards the championship, so it becomes one of your 2-3 throw away races.

          It sounds like you just have 1 club champion? We have a champion for each class.

          85 points for just turning up seems a little strange to me, and 1 point per lap for a 20 min endurance race seems a little unfair too, that is (100?) points for winning a 20 minute race when the sprint guys are getting 400 points for winning a <2 minute race, could you finish but come last in a 5 boat mono race and get more points than winning the enduro class? (not that it matters if you have a champion for each class, but if you have one club champion I would not be happy with that system if I was an enduro racer, a placing needs to have the same reward in every class).

          Our bouy cuts or jump start penalties are applied to the individual heat in which they occurred, 5 seconds for the first buoy cut and 1 lap for every cut thereafter, 1 lap for a jump start.

          All the motor sport championships that I have seen give more than one additional point for first and second places, favouring those that sometimes win over those that consistently finish in the midfield.

            Hi NativePaul
            Yes we have individual class champions as well, in fact we have a KOTL champion and Enduro also. It is just the overall championship that there is an issue with. Pretty much only because I won it! Some of the petrol guys just don't like being beaten by an electric guy. I was also the only one who has turned out every race day in the last two years, won some, lost some but overall did enough to win! Some only turn up for half the race days!
            The points system used is one that is used at another club, why the 85 points? Dunno just is. The overall champion is a persons best performance for the day x the best 8 of 11 race days. It always seemed fair and gave anyone the chance to win it.
            In the enduro race an extra bouy is put out to lengthen the course so usually the winning boat will do 40 something laps.
            The extra points for 1st and 2nd places sounds like a good idea.
