    Weird flex cable

Anybody ever had a .187 cable measure out at .174"?

Explains why I could never get a coupler to hold.

Nope. Usually around .185. I had one at .182, not sure where it came from.

sounds like a 4mm shaft to me.
here's a variety of collets that will fit that flex.

Another interesting thing about this one. It's not very flexible. Like half as flexible as another I had on the shelf. I don't know where this goofy one came from.

I just measured mine. It was at like ,
.162 but.....I stripped it out Saturday. ..does that count? Lol

On a serious note, I'll go measure a few I have real quick and see where they come in at.

No. It's stole it out of my old Wildthing. I've had problems with it before. I thought it was because I didn't solder the end. So I did. Threw it in the whip after cutting about a 1/4" off. Spun in the coupler.

All the ones I measured were right. I've noticed some have small wire and some have big wire. Is it possible that the cable tightened up a little reducing it's diameter and making it stiffer.....as a result of not being wound correctly at the factory?

Yes. TFL made a bunch like that. I think I still have one or two.

So the plot thickens... Is this the same flex shaft that was being used at the same time you were swearing off Octura couplers?

IDK Probably. Thinking back though....... The one that I was having problems with in the WT was pretty torn up. So Tom and I soldered up a fresh one with StayBright on the end. The new one was probably a TFL. Went to a TFL coupler too. Then the next day racing PAGS for P mono I stuffed and nearly lost the boat. Lost a battery pack and killed another in the wreck. Acckkkk! It may be that the new shaft wasn't going to hold up long either and I just didn't find out because the boat was a mess. So the original shaft could have been undersized too for all I know. I can't remember where the original shaft came from. I wasn't into TFL when I built it winter of 2010 so it was likely a Hughey. Without being able to measure the old shaft I can't say for sure if it was the coupler or the flex size.

Last night we had two 3/16 shafts sitting side by side. That's how we noticed it.

I did find a fresh Hughey shaft for the dinosaur Whip in my drawer of debris. That shaft measures .187 on the money. The actual wire in the cable is larger than the wire on the undersized cable. I'll test again on Saturday with various couplers and see how it goes. I did get one good run on it before the grip on the coupler gave out.

I'll be checking all shafts when I buy them from now on.

Maybe a Hydro Marine. Their cables are far more rigid for their diameter compared to Hughey or others...

I'll take it of you want to get rid of it... lol..

I think the 4mm collet would grip it fine though.
