    Lift from Props..... Can someone please share what that means/ looks like

    OSE Fam,

    When setting up my boats, people always talked about "Lift" when selecting props and brands and I thought I understood what that means and what it looks like but I have come to the realization that I don't quite grasp the concept. What does "Lift" look like, how does it affect the attitude of the boat, what strut adjustment do you make to compensate for too much lift from a prop? What applications love lift and which ones don't. Please share any thoughts you may have. Thanks!!!

    Lift is misunderstood by most, model boaters, when we talk prop lift on model boats we talk about lifting the transom, this will put the bow in the water and cause bow steering and stuffing , lift was use on the older style boats that used solid shafts and fixed drive lines I hope this helps !

      Lift occurs then the prop's thrust cone is wide, pushing some water slightly up and down, not just back. The push down lifts the transom, which in model boats is called a lifting prop. In full scale boats the terminology is reversed and a "lifting" prop causes the bow to rise.

      Many model hydros like some lift from the prop to hold up the transom. If a low-lift prop is used then the strut will often need to be angled down a bit to provide the lift. Monos and catamarans generally do not use lifting props.

        Lift occurs due to excess water being push ahead of the blades.

            Jay, thanks for the explanation. ..I didn't know that. So would a little tip cup cut down some lift?

              Does a lifting prop have more pitch, how is the blade formed
              To cause the lift? Like octura what props are lifters?

                Simply to visualize it ,, it is how the water comes off the blade tips that causes the lift !!!

                  Adding to what Chris said, you can reduce lift - somewhat - by adding cup to the blade tips. This keeps the water on the blade a bit longer so instead of being thrown up and down, it blows off more in an aft direction. Remember that a prop does not really "screw" through the water (it slips), instead it pushes the water backwards in a cone shape - where Newton's Third Law takes over.
