A future burner or speed demon?

    My current setup is:
    • TFL Apparition
    • Leopard 3674, 1400kv
    • Fliermodel 200 Amps ESC
    • 6S (2x3S in series)

This weekend I discovered that one of my LiPo packs was puffed so I threw it away, so now I have to by new LiPo:s. And I was thinking to boost up the power plant to 8S, I did some calculation:

Leopard 3674, 1400kv: (from Leopards homepage)
    Max power: 2400W
    Max Amperage: 58A
    Max voltage: 42V

    8S=29,6V

    29,6V<42V

Voltage is within the max limit of motor and ESC.

Have I got the physics correct or will this be an amphibian flamethrower?

Rated voltage doesn't matter, rpm on the water does. The 42 volt rating is just silly, that's around 50,000 rpm on the water, totally useless. Running 8S on that motor will result in rather high rpm and you will need a smallish prop for around 36,000 rpm. You could run 8S but I'd strongly suggest running 6S with that particular motor - fewer potential problems.

How fast are you wanting to go? I think That motor you have is too small for that hull tho....

I run the same 3674 motor rated at 1400 kv in a BJ29 on 6s with a SK180 esc. Temps are nice and cool even with somewhat large props. I too would NOT run 8s to that motor. No experience with Flier esc's. Also, an Apparition hull is a bit large for a 3674 motor. If it were my boat, I would run something in the 4082 class at 1600 kv and stick with 6s.

That's what I was thinking. My rivercat is the same hull and even if I just wanted to tool around at slower speeds I'd still use a bigger motor than a 36mm

I'm a newbie to RC-boating so I'm just happy that the boat goes forward Thus I have no top speed goal with this boat. But since I must replace the power plant I was thinking that maybe I could go 8S. But hearing your answers I'll stick with 6S, as Fluid said: fewer problems.

Maybe next project will have a top speed goal, kfxguy's Rivercat is an inspiration.

            Thanks for all the feedback!

8s is way too much for that boat. Regular 4s packs won't fit anyway.
