    Bending tubing 101

Im a cheap skate and do most mods myself on all my RC junk.

I saw a few threads about bending tubing but no real answer so I thought id take ya through the process as my simple mind sees it.

I decided since I had a bunch of alum tubing lying around to build myself a few 540 motor cooling rings. Trying to get those tight bends by hand is nearly impossible, and using the tubing benders is out of the question and the springs will make the bend too large.

Step1 cap one end of your tube with tape

step 2 Fill the tube with salt or sugar, I use sugar it packs in harder and tastes better when you blow out the tube, fill the tube to the top then tp the taped end on the table a few times and the sugar will settle some, repeat as many times as necessary until there is no more settling, then seal the other end with tape.

Step 3. lay the tubing on a table and place your motor on top of the tubing, to get the bend to start, hold the motor tight to the tube and gently roll it around the motor, try not to apply all the force in one location to start, once you have a small amount of roll going around the motor you can roll it as fast and tight as you wish then until you have reached the ends.

Now slip out he motor and knock and blow out the sugar in the tubing, now rinse it out to make sure there is no residual in the tubes. now you are done.

Ill replace the blurry picture when I roll some more. Hope it helps someone

    Great write up there.
That is the method I use to.
The only difference is that i wind my coils around something a little smaller in diameter than the motor. For my 05 brushed cans I use a D-cell battery as the former and the coil is a snug fit on the motor.
I use salt but for the life of me I have yet to figure out a fast way to get it back out.
I find that if I rotate it while gently tapping it the salt comes out, it takes me about 5 minutes to wind a coil and 15 to get the salt out.
It is deffo cheaper than buying one though.
    See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

I find that 1.25" sch 40 pvc works nice for 540 motors, no salt but pull it around
Still waiting for my boat to come in.it came in

I was watching how its made, and they were making trumpets, and to get the mandrel bend, they filled the tubes with water or something, then froze them, then bent them. I wonder if that will work for our applications?

when i was in the navy years back i went to Hull Technicians A school in Philly. we would pack sand inside of sch. 40 black steel pipe and heat it up with the torch to make bends. now as a plumber/pipefitter, i still use this sometimes.
