    motor shafts ?

ok guys , I am looking at motors , an I see 5mm an 8mm shafts.
    what r the pro's an con's.
I'm getting a ML gp400v2 hydro built by Mike L. an now looking to get
my setup for it. I'm thinking of a 1500kv motor.with this size of boat,
    should I go with a .187 cable or .250 cable , this will be a 6s batts.

    Darryl.
    A .187 flex is plenty for a 6s setup in a GP400. That's all I run.

As for the difference between a 5mm & 8mm shaft? The longer the motor the more prone to 'Whip' the shaft is. I've just ordered (& received) a 4" (100mm) motor, & went for the 8mm shaft to keep the vibration down.
Even an 82mm motor with an 8mm shaft sounds so much smoother than a 5mm shaft.
See the danger. THEN DO IT ANYWAY!!!

Not beating up on you just thinking out loud... If a 5mm shaft can create whip which it does, why not 1/4" cable? Less whip right? I use 1/4" cable in my 2, 6S boats because they run on 2P and are large & quite heavy. Both boats have short 11" long flex shafts.

I've got same boat using same motor 8mm shaft, get a MBP collet (great investment)...I've been wondering about whip/vibration..would using a .250 flex to 3/16 shaft really make that much of a difference. I thought about doing this on 8S and up...GP400 nice choice, Mike builds/designs great boats.....DJ

            Ray.
There seems to be some confusion here.
The whip, or vibration, I'm talking about is within the motor shaft. Not the flex shaft. The OP was asking about the pro's & con's between the 5mm & 8mm motor shafts.
All I was saying was that a long 5mm motor shaft can whip, especially if the rotor magnets are slightly unbalanced. The vibration can be quite horrendous. An 8mm shaft is much smoother in the longer 92mm & 100mm etc motors.
I've had to replace a 5mm shaft rotor in a brand new TP Power motor because of the whip/vibration.

            DJ.
Yes. Up to 6s set ups I use 3/16" shafts. But on the 8s boats I use 1/4". Not because of any whip or vibration issues with the flex shafts. Just for the strength.

            Cheers.
            Paul.
