Jolly Cat - Do I need anything else for her to go?

Ok I’m building the Jolly Cat – Single drive and trying to lock down my order. I wanted to post this to all of you in the hopes that you could steer me in the right direction or give feedback on things I may want to think about or that I’m missing that will prevent me from getting her in the water. I don’t need it to be flying over 50 mph, but later in life I may want to, thus why I went with a good hull from the start.

Will I need to order an antenna, if so which one will work with the DX2?

What type of foam? Is there some type of fun tube that everyone use’s? I’ve seen them in some hulls, but not sure where to get nee that is that small.

Total Parts needed for the boat:

ToysPort Jolly Catamaran – Single Drive $599.00
    Octura m440 Sharpened & Balanced - $34.99
    Large 1/8"ID Silicon Tubing (3’) - $1.99
Castle Creations Hydra HV 180- $379
    Spectrum DX2.0 DSM 2CH Pistol – (I think this comes with a servo) $169
Spectrum receiver (is there a water proof version?)

    Order from the Neu site:
    Neu 1521 1.5d 1860kv motor & Water jacket
Lipo Batteries (might start out with 4s then better later)

    Extra’s:
    Corrosion X 6 Ounce Aerosol - $8.95
    Rubberize-It Grip Dip Coating - $9.99
Roll of Hatch Tape - $2.99

    Again thanks for any guidance.

Well I have the the twin drive jolly ... that said I was going to put the antenea on the inside i decided against it!

Now I have put it inside of our Supervees ---- I was concerned about the Jolly --- with the amount of money invested in her I feel more secure with the antenea outside!

A loss of signal and hitting something would just ruin my day! I know some have mount them inside but my driving skills are not the greatest sooooo .......
We did it with a Bang!

Thats going to be a fun setup.

Don't forget your 5.5mm gold connectors.

You will need two lipos for 4s2p.

Also the 1521 1.5d will swing at least 445 - 447 on 4s. You may want to try the carbon props in this range until your temps are right, then get a nice shiny one.

I have had bad problems with the spectrum dx 2.0, I would not reccomend this radio, the signal bounces off the water and over the boat. I hate mine so much that I wouldn't even put it on the swap shop.

      Please keep us posted. John

Ok which ‘Carbon’ prop should I be looking at (only saw 4mm and I think the drive shaft is 5mm(might be missing something though))?
          - I can grab a few different versions of the props, but again any guidance on this is appreciated.

If the Spectrum dx2 has some issues, which radio should I get? Did you find one that works better for you?
          - Can you throw me a link for the radio to buy?

Still stuck on what antenna I should use on her?
          - Not sure which one would be a good choice. I also guess this depends on which radio I go with as I’ll need to get a receiver as well, but I’ll need to know what antenna will work with which receiver.

5.5 gold connectors – how many will I need?

Lipo’s 4s2p – there are a lot of choices in these, but do any of you have a tried and true brand you like more? I figure I’ll start off a little slow, than move up in cell, but I’m also of the mind that sometimes it’s better to again spend the money up front vs. later on and having extra lipo’s sitting around.
          - Is there a good link that explains how to connect these up in the boat and what I may need?

I’m also looking for any good links on build layouts, battery placement, etc. Still searching the forums, but a lot of you know the exact place to look so always good to pick your brains 

I currently have this charger/balancer, it’s not a terrible one, but I know there’s much better.

It comes with it's own antenna. Its a very small coax cable with the shield cut off at the tip, leaving about 1.5" of exposed center conductor. That's your active antenna element. You just need to slide it into a small plastic tube to hold it vertically. Manual got it covered.

At least 5 pairs. Get 10 pairs and keep the rest as spares or for more battery packs later on.

Ok looks like I'm about ready.

Waiting on props to get with the Neu 1521 1y motor and 6s2p lipos.

I use pool noodes. You can get them at Wal Mart, Target, Walgreens, just about anywhere. Small, inexpensive, very effective.

Some things I see you left out:
velcro, heat shrink tubing, drive dog, prop nut, thrust bearing, motor coupler, receiver battery pack, water outlet, kwik switch mount, solder, and a lipo balancer. You might want to get the CastleLink programer also.

That's just off the top of my head.

Thanks, I did have some of that from my Helicopter stuff, but a few I'm not sure about.

I have the velcro, heat shrink tubing, solder, lipo balancer (built into the 610c charger) and Castlelink programer.

The 'Drive Dog' - have no clue what this is

Prop nut, thrust bearing, motor coupler, water outlet - thought this was part of the hull but I guess I'll need to ask Steve if it is or not.

Receiver batter pack - I'll have to look for one of thse as well.

Thanks for the info Blake, I ordered everything on the list so far. Might need to get a few more props as well.

                      Again thanks!

The drive dog is attached to the shaft with a set screw betwen the strut and the prop. Looks like this...

                          Thanks Blaky,

Sent a message off asking about that part as well (already placed my order today so Steve is going through it now). All the other stuff (Prop nut. 5mm motor coupler, water outlet are in the boat) come with the Jolly Hull so I'm ok there.

                          Thanks again!

I swear it's so nice to deal with people that tend to be over the age of 12. I make video games and man tryin to deal with all the... well 12'yr olds get a bit... lol OLD.

I'm guessing that it's the damn $$$ it takes to be serious in this hobby. I know back in the day there was no way in hell I could pay for all of this.

I have been using the Spektrum DX3.0 with out any problems in my boat. The only thing I have noticed is that they are prone glitching if they get damp. I solved this problem by spraying Corrosion X in the receiver.
