    heat sensor

has anybody thought of a shut-off device that would have all electronic equipment in boat rigged to heat sensors that would cut battery power if any electronics went over a pre-determined temperature? wouldnt that be nice.

Just another thing to fail or cause some kind of running problems.
Keep it simple maybe use a data logger esc or eagletree for your setups and get some actual useful info as to why something may be heating up.
I always use my eagletree for new setups or when I change something, then it comes out once I've read the logs and decided how they worked or didn't!
I run about 20 seconds basically one full throttle pull to top speed, turn the boat around and bring it in, read the data and make a decision. I know exactly what is happening long before anything heats up enough to cause a shutdown.
It's just a tuning aid, I don't run the ET once the setup is done, just more connectors and longer wiring runs to cause potential problems.
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Many ESCs (Swordfish, T180, Castle, etc) already have this feature; I have not experienced or seen this cause running problems (unlike some LVCs for example). Since the ESC is usually the first thing to fail, having thermal protection on that piece makes sense. Mark has a good point about setup testing, and with the increasing number of ESCs with logging features it is easier than ever to do.

i run heat sensors on my telemetry and if the temp goes above a preset value my handset lets me know so i can bring it in, great for testing new setups to ensure things don't go up in flames.

I am using the Traxxas telemetry system to measure esc, motor, and battery temp. Other telemetry data is GPS speed, drive shaft RPM, LiPo voltage, receiver voltage.
