Twin Outboard Vs Single Outboard Efficiency

    Morning All!

I've got a little wee scratch build stepped deep vee RC boat, which is powered by a single 550 outboard. I'm just wondering if any out there in internet land knew anything about single outboard vs dual outboard efficiency.

I kinda figured adding the drag of another outboard, plus its weight, plus an additional battery and ESC, would neutralize any performance gains – however cool twin outboards would looking.

Thinking a brush-less single outboard might be more fun.
    Your thoughts please callers?

The gears can't handle a brushless

There is a bit of a gain. Especially if you use lipo packs. But not a breathtaking notice. You will have to go up in prop size to realize the gain. Also cool looking boat!

You would need to go away from that outboard unit you are using and go to one that will handle a larger brushless motor. Then you can see alot more potential.

If you decide to go twin --- depending on the esc you are using you can also pick up some speed by changing to a 23 turn or 19 turn motor! I think the standard EP1 motor is 27 turn!

Been my experience that you have to watch temps not use Lipo's until you are sure of the temps you are running with brushed motors and NiMH .... I let the Genie out of two motors trying to make the jump to light speed!

Thoughts on shifting to an Aquacraft brushless inboard? Obviously this means a lot of new hardwear that i don't really understand. Would someone be able to suggest a hardware setup for my boat? Its 33' with fairly deep vee.

I would like to see more pics of you boat (I like it a lot).
I would go with a 7xl 540 size can in a 33" the svpower will be weak sauce
the speedmaster hardware is nice for monos check out the delta force 33 builds your set up should be about the same
The Manx has been sitting dormant, but I think I finally have my motivation back. I hope to see it float soon.

You are way underpowered with your original system for that size hull. Ditch the outboard and go with some thoughts as posted by Reddywatts. I suggest/I2XL or KB45/11/XL/4SP/5SP/5000/ 25C/ X642

I agree with the Scottsman.... In most set ups a 7xl wouldnt have the torque to turn a big enough prop. Cool boat tho Where did you get it???

All built straight out of my noodle, few sketches, few mock-ups in card board, then the real thing. I've been meaning to post a build thread. Having no idea what I'm doing does have its down falls. (such as buying an expensive outboard and paying ridiculous $$$ to freight it out to little ol New Zealand, only to discover its slow)... but its sure has been fun experimenting!

Forgive my ignorance, but all those motor acronyms just went straight over my head. Got further links?

Search a few of your mates on this site. They will give you the straight goods as will OSE members.

Could you please share some more info/pics of your home built hull. Its an interesting design. How does it handle the rough?? Cheers

                              Yoohoo another KIWI here !!
I have seen pics of you boat before on one of the local car? forums.
Good to see you have found this place, there is a lot of help handed out here.
For a start where in NZ are you? I'm on the North Shore.
OSE is a great place to buy stuuf and the shipping is not as bad as I imagined. I just got a 700SC from here.
Graham Dogget is a member here and one of the big players on the NZ boat scene. He is very knowledgable and extremely helpfull, there are a couple of other Kiwis here too.

Like some of the other guys have suggested, get some more pics of your boat up here with some dimensions and possible the weight.
To get a really good answer you will need to tell us the following.
What you have, motor radio, cells, chargers, etc.
What sort of running you want to do. sport/fun, racing
What sort of speed you would like
Roughly what sort of coin you are happy to throw at it......zero is not an answer for this one.

                              catch ya soon !
                              See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood
